Sisters District Ranger Kristie Miller has given the nod to a paved trail running from Sisters to Black Butte Ranch through the woods on the south side of Highway 20. Miller issued a draft decision notice authorizing the proposed path last week. An "objection period" will precede a final decision on the project. A Sisters man suffered life-threatening injuries in a single-vehicle crash east of Sisters on July 6. The crash occurred at about 5:45 p.m. on Sunday. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find that a Ford Explorer had left the roadway and struck a tree on the driver's door, pinning the driver in the vehicle. Erin Borla is shifting her role with the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce to focus on marketing for tourism in Sisters. The move, which will take place this summer, leaves the role of executive director open. The Chamber will begin a search for a new executive director immediately. Sisters Habitat for Humanity has completed its fourth home-repair project. A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Friday, July 3, at the Landis-Brandt home on Goldcoach, off Holmes Road. Beyond the pickups, camp trailers and tents spread across the vast parking lot at Hoodoo Mountain Resort, men and women in groups of four or five, all carrying traditional longbows, walked along from station to station, stopping to take one shot each at lions, leopards and hippos hidden among the pines, rocks and underbrush of the Nordic ski trail. Local resident Patrick Eckford is the recipient of a 2014 Big Chainring Award. Two quilters were asked to describe their quilting style in one word. Wendy Hill quickly responded, "eclectic." Pat Pease had to think on it a while before she came up with, "contemporary." Two Sisters girls were crowned state champions in the girls' 9-10 age division at the 2014 Hershey's Track and Field Oregon State Finals held at Hayward Field on Saturday, June 28. Paul "Dayton" Smith passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday, May 29, 2014, in his Sisters home at the age of 70. Dayton is preceded in death by his son, Monty; father Donald and mother Maxine. Frank Everett Engstrom died on Thursday, June 26, at his home, surrounded by family. Frank was born in New York City and grew up in West Englewood, NJ. His parents were Jessie Catherine and Frank Leon Engstrom, and he had one brother, Robert. Frank graduated from Bucknell University, Pennsylvania, with a degree in mechanical engineering. With mountain streams and plentiful wildflower meadows, I have long considered the Obsidian Trail to be one of the premiere hikes into the Three Sisters Wilderness; yet, until recently, I hadn't been on the trail in a quarter of a century!
