One colorful homemade quilt, hand-carried eight years ago by Sisters Country resident Janet Storton to a Ugandan village where women are a marginalized group, has inspired threads of real socioeconomic change. A female motorcyclist was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon, July 3, when she lost control trying to slow down for a traveling partner along U.S. Forest Service Road 1419 about four miles north of Highway 20 in the Camp Sherman area. To the Editor: I would like to respond to Mr. Fisher's recent letter in The Nugget. STA (Sisters Trails Alliance) has been working on paved trails to complement the existing mountain bike and road-biking trails since 2009. The proposed trails have been the result of public input at meetings, including the annual STA meeting, over the past two years. The proposals have been met with excited discussion and support. It is a beautiful 4th of July, Independence Day. I started the day by riding my bike into town to enjoy the morning celebrations that have been occurring in our country for over 200 years. Two longtime Sisters educators are taking their gig on the road - halfway around the world. Deirdre and Charlie Kanzig are taking a two-year leave of absence from the Sisters School District to teach at Taejon Christian International School in Taejon, South Korea. Jaymie Kaczmarek and Sarah Wilder recently completed a grueling four-hour test for taekwondo black belt. Sarah, who earned her 1st-degree black belt in California before moving to Oregon, tested for 2nd-degree black belt. Both are students at Outlaw Martial Arts in Sisters. Sheila Jones has been cutting hair for 22 years. "I've been working in hair salons since high school," she said. Now she's opened her own Elements salon in Sisters, a place she visited a lot growing up. A native Oregonian, Jones got her start in the salon business in Carlsbad, California. Virginia Smith passed away on May 20 at the age of 95 while in the care of her granddaughter Lissa in Silverton. She had suffered from Alzheimer's disease in recent years. She and her husband, Marvin (who passed in 2007), lived in Sisters for 15 years from 1990 to 2005. A family service was held and she was buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Connie Tyson, a longtime Central Oregon resident, died July 3 at Hospice House of Bend. She was 93. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Redmond Memorial Cemetery. Connie was born May 25, 1920, in Bend to Merle Miller and Gladys Farnsworth. When an accident in 2005 left quilter Claire Spector with neural-visual blindness, she feared she would never pick up a needle and thread again. She decided to donate her nearly 60 boxes of fabric to her friend and fellow quilter, Betty Anne Guadalupe of Prineville. The annual Sisters Recycle Run and Walk attracted a healthy crowd on a beautiful morning July 4, with over 50 participants combined involved in the 5-kilometer and 8-kilometer courses. The Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) has incorporated some interesting features into their trail system surrounding the town of Sisters, and Eagle Rock is one of them.
