  • Sisters marks sunny centennial parade

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Jul 10, 2001

Sisters sparkled like a diamond for its 100th birthday celebration on Sunday, July 8. Golden sun shone down from a clear, blue sky and a light breeze gently rippled the American flag as Jim Neal bore it on horseback at the head of the afternoon's Centennial parade. Evocative of old-fashioned Founders' Day events of the 19th Century, the parade gave a visual history lesson as entrants represented key events in Sisters' past. The first Indian inhabitants were followed by fur... Full story

  • Fire threatens homes near Sisters

    Updated Jul 10, 2001

A wildland fire behind the Sisters Rodeo grounds southeast of Sisters threatened several homes on Saturday, July 7, before an attack by an air tanker helped fire crews get the upper hand. The fire near Trout Lane was spotted by fire lookouts at 4:54 p.m. The fire burned in grass and open pine and juniper stands and grew to about three acres before firefighters contained the blaze at about 7 p.m. The land is under the protection of the Oregon Department of Forestry and lies within a quarter-mile of several rural homes. The... Full story

  • Restoration project faces fish concerns

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Jul 10, 2001

Local fishermen extoll the virtues of the Trout Creek Swamp area as a kid-friendly, pleasant recreational spot. There is some concern that restoration plans for a 20-acre area encompassing the swamp will do more harm than good. In the early 1900s, cattle ranchers cut ditches in the area to channel multiple meandering streams into a few deep, narrow ditches, lowering the water table and creating better grazing conditions. The Forest Service wants to return the area to swampy... Full story

Quilters at work during "A Quilters' Affair." Hordes of quilters will visit Sisters on Saturday, July 14, to enjoy the 1,000 quilts that will festoon the buildings throughout town. But the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is the culmination of a week of events, and visitors to the show itself will enjoy activities beyond the display of quilts. Already on Monday, quilters were manning their sewing machines at Sisters High School, engaging in the week-long series of classes and workshops known as "A Quilters' Affair." Meanwhile,... Full story

  • Camp Sherman goes after weeds

    Craig F. Eisenbeis|Updated Jul 10, 2001

Community-minded Camp Sherman citizens are taking the law into their own hands. Weed law, that is. Several species of exotic weeds, classified as "noxious" have shown up locally. Camp Sherman residents are doing their best to see that the undesirable plants do not gain a foothold in their area. These "weed vigilantes" got their start last year and call themselves the Camp Sherman Noxious Weed Work Party. According to spokesman Beth Van Campen, the group has about 20 members on a call list and six to 10 workers who are... Full story

  • City to provide traffic bypass

    Updated Jul 10, 2001

Travelers through Sisters can get around the Quilt Show crush of pedestrian and vehicle traffic on a detour route set up by City of Sisters Public Works Director Gary Frazee. Signs will direct traffic through the detour route. Westbound drivers can turn right on Locust Street as they enter town, travel north to Barclay Drive and turn left. They will follow Barclay Drive through the industrial park and then jog right on Pine Street to Forest Road 100. That road will take them back to Highway 20. The detour route will be set... Full story

A local group of women who call themselves the "Casual Quilters" will be featured at the 26th Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show on July 14. Their projects have included a 1996 quilt that was auctioned off to help fund the new Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store. Last Christmas, in another venture, the women made doll quilts... Full story
