    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Jul 12, 2016

"If you guys weren't there on April 15, I wouldn't be here on July 5." That was the message delivered by an emotional Ed Pond to the citizens and first responders who literally brought him back from the dead on that spring day. Pond was present at an award ceremony honoring the friends and emergency personnel who saved his life, held at Sisters Fire Hall on Tuesday, July 5. Pond, 72, who lives in Redmond, had come out to the Sisters area to help his friend Jim Morrell fall... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 07/13/2016

    Updated Jul 12, 2016

To the Editor: My wife and I visited Sisters in June 2016 and stayed at the Sisters Creekside Campground. While there I went for a run on the Peterson Ridge Trail. Unfortunately, I fell and needed EMT and ambulance assistance to retrieve me and take me to the hospital in Bend. A few days later I had surgery to repair a ruptured quadriceps tendon, am spending two weeks in a hotel in Bend recovering and returning to the orthopedist for the follow-up visit, and then will return home to Colorado to begin physical therapy and... Full story

  • The sound of freedom

    Jeff Taylor|Updated Jul 12, 2016

About that noisy Sisters airport... I was able to spend the better part of last Sunday at the Sisters Airport 4th of July party. Boy oh boy was it noisy. Can you hear a smile? I like to think you can. If so, those smiles were loud. I heard old friends reconnecting, new friends being made. I heard grownups acting like children, gleeful while being able to look over a hot rod or an airplane. I heard children acting like grownups, getting to sit in an airplane for the first time. Listening to a pilot explain the controls and... Full story

    Updated Jul 12, 2016

  • Unfolding mysteries at Lost Lake

    Brent McGregor|Updated Jul 12, 2016

Years ago I heard stories of large fish that lived just west of Santiam Pass in one of over 19 lakes in Oregon that harbor the name Lost Lake. Perhaps this is the most fitting lake for the name because it nearly vanishes from sight every year. The water migrates down through cracks in the ground causing the lake to empty out each summer. Even so, I wanted to see for myself if the fish story held any bait. With a snorkel and mask, I surveyed the lake for fish, pulling myself... Full story

  • Sisters Movie House has new owner

    Erin Borla|Updated Jul 12, 2016

It was cold day in 2005 and snow covered the ground when Lisa Clausen and her eight-week-old puppy, Ruby, drove a golden shovel down, breaking ground on the Sisters Movie House. Fast forward over 11 years and Lisa, along with now-12-year-old Ruby, are moving on. Recently, Clausen quietly sold the Sisters Movie House to Drew Kaza; the ownership change will take place at the end of July. Clausen did not make the decision to sell quickly. • No decision

    Craig Rullman|Updated Jul 12, 2016

The political parties, for many of us, are increasingly irrelevant. The problem is, they don't seem to represent the very many of us who feel that certain planks of the platforms on either side could be combined to make a much more interesting, relevant - and moderate - political party. For instance, I'm for guns, lots of them, but I'm also for women's reproductive rights. Under the current arrangement, I don't get to have them both. Isn't that just stupid? If I want to have m... Full story

  • Nugget editor launches Kickstarter campaign for book

    Craig Rullman|Updated Jul 12, 2016

Nugget Newspaper editor Jim Cornelius was born and raised in the suburbs of L.A., but as a child his family had a cabin in the Angeles National Forest, where he roamed the woods with a pellet gun and stories of Apache warriors, Daniel Boone, and Davy Crockett informing his imagination. "The first time I ever saw a movie in a theater was when my brother took me to see Jeremiah Johnson," Jim says, and from those experiences his fascination with the frontier, and the men and wome... Full story

  • Beatles cover band to play Sisters

    Updated Jul 12, 2016

Angeline's Bakery will host Abbey Road LIVE! for the July 15 entry in the Festive Friday Series. Abbey Road LIVE! is not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act; don't expect mop-top haircuts and vintage Rickenbacker guitars. Rather, this show is about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles material in a raw and spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings. Combining attention to detail with a creative exuberance, the band always... Full story

  • The Irish are worried

    Dan Glode|Updated Jul 12, 2016

The whole object of travel is not to set foot on a foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one's own country as a foreign land. - G.K. Chesterton My wife and I are truly blessed. Since we retired we have had an opportunity to pursue our favorite hobby - travel. Our last trip, in May and early June, took us to Ireland for three weeks. If you have heard good things about Ireland double them, it is fabulous. We leased a car and drove extensively throughout the country. In three weeks you can cover a lot of territory in a coun... Full story

  • Think Twice

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Jul 12, 2016

You'd think, with all the hoopla we hear about caring for our forests and being careful with fire, people either living in and/or visiting Sisters Country would be more in line with the Conservation Ethic. Not so! Last Memorial Day weekend some idiotic ATV-user tore down the rail fence set up to protect Prairie Farm meadow from mud-boggers and ran an ATV all over the meadow - that was healing from past mud-bogger damage - leaving more ruts and torn-up toad, frog, salamander,... Full story

  • Running commentary

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Jul 12, 2016

Veteran athletes and young guns will represent the U.S. at the Olympics in track and field. The Olympic trials for track and field concluded Sunday, July 10, in Eugene, following 10 days of intense competition to determine the representatives for the U.S. in Rio next month. When it was all said and done, some veterans prevailed as champions, but there were plenty of young guns who made their mark as well. Additionally, a boatload of athletes with Oregon ties qualified for the Olympic Games. My favorite of the "old-timers,"... Full story

  • There's gold in the Black Hills

    Craig Eisenbeis|Updated Jul 12, 2016

At one time or another, almost everyone makes a pilgrimage of patriotism to Mt. Rushmore. While much of South Dakota is eminently forgettable, there are lots of things to do and see in South Dakota's Black Hills. So, once there, don't just gaze at the massive stone faces of the presidents and leave. Devote some time to take in all that the Black Hills have to offer. The Black Hills have been revered by Native Americans for hundreds of years; and, in the mad rush of... Full story

You've started to notice that he's been scratching a lot, even though he's already been treated for fleas and ticks. So you decide to bring him for a visit to the groomer, and what she discovers after bathing your furry friend is an underlying skin condition causing him to feel very uncomfortable and itchy. Grooming isn't a canine luxury, it's a necessity... Full story

  • Golf Fitness for a summer of great rounds

    Andrew Loscutoff|Updated Jul 12, 2016

Golf is a popular activity in Sisters Country - but it brings with it some aches and pains. A quick review of the statistics reveal a common trend: Low back pain, elbow tendonitis, plantar (foot) tendonitis, knee pain, and shoulder pain. The repeated stress of twisting and explosive swinging put unaccustomed stress on the joints and surrounding tissues. These aches and pains can be avoided with a little preventative maintenance. To understand how to avoid these injuries one must first understand the mechanics of a golf... Full story
