To the Editor: It's hard to figure out what's going on with the school district. A year ago, all was rosy. There was plenty of money to restore the reduced number of school days and to add well-paid administrators. The community even extended the additional tax levy for the district for another five years. Then, out of the blue, came word of a projected $800,000 deficit for this year and the specter of a four-day school week at the expense of district support staff. And now we have the announcement of the addition of yet... Full story

After failing three times since January to get a planning commission recommendation for approval, an amended proposal for the rezoning of a major portion of North Sisters Business Park to single-family residential sailed through the city council with no comments or discussion offered by either the public or council members. The plan approved by the council will allow for the construction of a little more than 100 homes on the property and the adjacent and already-approved residential lots to the north of the park. The revised... Full story

After watching her boyfriend Keegan Bloff play rugby for about a year-and-a-half now, Sisters High School student Samantha Wavrin decided that she wanted a hand in the action. Since the only high school rugby team in Central Oregon was the Bend Blues (a boys team) she decided to make a few phone calls to Rugby Oregon, the statewide rugby association, to find out how to get a girls team started. Once Wavrin found out that it was possible for her to start a Girls Rugby 7s team,... Full story

Sisters' 17th annual self-guided "Quilts in the Garden" Home and Garden Tour showed that when you combine quilts and gardens it's beneficial and rewarding for both gardeners and quilters. One of the event coordinators for the Sisters Garden Club, Marsha Lewis, traveled around to the different homes on tour during the day to make sure everything was going well with their hosts. "It is a fundraiser, but our main goal is to provide an event for our community and our visiting... Full story

A new indie comedy showing this week at Sisters Movie House has some interesting Sisters connections. "The Discoverers," partially shot in Oregon, features Griffin Dunne in the lead role. Dunne is the son of Dominick Dunne, who rather famously put a shattered life back together during a year-long sojourn in Cabin #5 at Twin View Resort in Camp Sherman. The film also features songs in the soundtrack by Gregory Alan Isakov, who was a hit at the Sisters Folk Festival a couple of... Full story

Rickenbacher is a friendly sort, and she just loves animals - especially dogs - and at... Full story
You return home after being gone for a few hours. Fido is at the door to greet you wagging his tail with "Squiggles," his favorite rubber squeak toy, clenched between his teeth, ready to play. Dogs play, snuggle, and sleep with their toys; some even bury their toys. Toys are important for puppies and young dogs. Dogs that have toys to play with are less bored. Often, dogs that have behavior problems have lots of energy and nothing to do. Toys can direct your furry friend to he... Full story

In July comes the Metolius count. Three of the main goals of NABA's Butterfly Count Program are to gather data that will monitor... Full story
My grandfather Frank, my father's father, popped in to say hello the other day, and I was reminded how much I regretted not talking to him more about what life was like for him and Grandma Jo back in the early 1900s. He used to write me long letters, many pages on both sides, in pencil on yellow legal paper, over the years because after about age 16, I rarely saw them when we moved from Long Island, New York, to Miami Beach, Florida. All I remembered hearing as a child was that they had many adventures traveling across the co... Full story
