Central Oregon's own Bech's Big Bore Bad Boys, raced through the weekend at the Portland International Speedway. The race on Sunday was hard fought between Bill Cotter of Seattle and Art Brumton of Clovedale, British Columbia, each driving Corvettes with 427 cubic inch engines in a field of 26 race cars. A looming plume of smoke on Friday afternoon, July 19, made Sisters residents wonder if the fires to the north had blown up again. But according to fire information officer Kate Goossens, the plume actually was evidence of a successful back burning operation designed to create a buffer for Green Ridge. The smoke rose rapidly as an inversion lifted. "The plume was actually a very successful finish to (firefighters) burning operations," Goossens said. - A deputy arrested a Sisters man for a restraining order violation after a traffic stop. The man and his paramour are back together, but they hadn't had the restraining order dismissed. - A 17-year-old youth decided to quit the Oregon Youth Challenge diversion program. He called his parents, who reportedly told him he was on his own. The youth got scared in Sisters, realizing his home in Portland was a long way away.
