The Bald Peter Fire was clearly too close for comfort when viewed from Green Ridge. A lightning-caused fire on the Warm Springs Reservation reminded Camp Sherman and Sisters area residents of the ever present dangers of wildland blazes this week. The Bald Peter Fire, which had grown to over 1,000 acres over the weekend, was raging a mere 12 miles or so northwest of Camp Sherman. An Air National Guard helicopter plucked an injured climber off the slopes of North Sister last week. Matt Gorman, 40, of Pomeroy, Washington, was hurt when a 500- to 800-pound boulder slid out from under him. The climber rode the boulder downslope for a while before he was thrown clear. Gorman suffered an injured knee and numerous cuts, including one that nearly severed a finger, according to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports. A Deschutes County Grand Jury indicted Shawn Curtis Holt of Sisters on a charge of first degree theft last week, in connection with the theft of thousands of dollars worth of stereo and electronic equipment and tools from Radio Shack in Sisters. The alleged thefts took place between March 15 and April 15, 2001, according to the indictment. Holt, 21, was an employee at the Sisters Radio Shack store. The Sisters Kiwanis Club's 2001 golf tournament held June 23 raised over $20,000, according to event organizers. The tournament, jointly sponsored by Sisters Ray's Food Place Foundation and the Sisters Kiwanis Community Services Foundation brought a record 200 golfers to the Aspen Lakes Golf Course. The proceeds from this event are to be shared by the Doernbacher Children's Hospital of Portland, the Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation (SOAR) and other programs benefiting Sisters children. Sisters Fire Chief Don Rowe wants the Sisters City Council to adopt a new fire safety ordinance. "Deschutes County has been developing a wildfire hazard map," Rowe told the council at its Thursday, July 12, meeting. "The county recently passed an ordinance which adopted the map. "The ordinance will change building codes to better promote fire safety, mainly specifying what roofing materials will be allowed," Rowe said. Visitors to Camp Sherman were treated to a quilt show at the Community Hall. All the magical elements were in place for the Pine Needlers quilt show in Camp Sherman on Friday, July 13. The Sisters Centennial Wagon Train pulled out of Prineville right on time last Saturday morning on the first leg of its journey through time.
