    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Jul 29, 2008

Sisters' real estate market may have slowed down and construction has backed off from the fevered pitch of a year ago, but developers are planning some major commercial endeavors in Sisters. A three-story hotel is in the early planning stages, located in the Pine Meadow Ranch development on Hood Avenue. The property owner is Celia Hung, who owns Sisters KOA Campground. Van Lom Architects is the applicant. Portland Developer Willamette Planning Group, LLC has filed a land-use... Full story

  • Thieves steal disc golf basket on Sisters course

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Jul 29, 2008

Hole No. 17 on Sisters' disc golf course is missing. The steel basket that catches disc golf putts at the course near Sisters High School was reported stolen on Monday, July 21. Course creator Kathy Kemper-Green suspects it was stolen sometime Sunday night. It was unlikely to have been a random or impulsive act, Green noted. The thieves would have required bolt cutters to break the stout padlock on the base of the base of the basket stand and would have probably required a... Full story

Lon Kellstrom, Sisters City Councilor|Updated Jul 29, 2008

Several times in the last 10 years, High Country Disposal (HCD), the garbage service for Bend, Redmond, and Deschutes County, has asked the Sisters City council to grant them a franchise for the trash collection in Sisters. Each time the city council has declined. Earlier this year, HCD again requested a franchise to collect Sisters' residential and commercial garbage. Our city council again declined. Subsequently, HCD "sweetened" their proposal. The council concluded that HCD's more lucrative offer at least required further... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 07/30/2008

    Updated Jul 29, 2008

To the Editor: In the July 16 issue, The Nugget ran a wonderful cover story about this year's Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, and we appreciate it!  Unfortunately the front page photo that was selected to represent the event was of a transient vendor who was not part of the show.  This particular vendor had every opportunity to be an official participant but withdrew her entries (and her offer to volunteer her time) because she didn't like our limit of five sale quilt entries per person.   Its particularly... Full story

  • Miller pioneered CIA 'risk-of-capture' program

    Updated Jul 29, 2008

Bill Miller of Sisters has led an adventurous life. A ski enthusiast, he enlisted in the elite 10th Mountain Division and saw combat in the rugged terrain of northern Italy during World War II (see The Nugget, July 23, page 3). After discharge in 1946, Miller decided to go to college. A college degree was quite an ambition for a guy who graduated 449th out of a high school class of 452. The admissions dean gave the veteran a break and said if he did well on College Board Exams, maybe something could be done. Miller did and... Full story

  • Sisters men draw crowds with rare race car

    Updated Jul 29, 2008

Jeff and Jerry (J.T.) Taylor of Sisters have built a rare, if not unique, race car: a 1964 Studebaker Daytona. Wherever the car has raced, officials and fans gathered to snap photos, ask questions and give compliments. What those fans don't know was the central question, the question that guided this project from first nut to final bolt, the question that spurred father and son as they worked over 18 months to create something from scratch without any history, manuals, or... Full story

  • Sisters leadership program enters second year

    Updated Jul 29, 2008

The "Sisters Visioning" process, in the fall 2006, produced a number of outcomes. One was the "Sisters Visioning Statement," a road map by which community-wide decisions could be made. Another outcome was the formation of "Leadership Sisters," a small committee which clearly saw the need to "train up" new community leaders. During the October 2006 Future Fair, a part of the visioning process, participants rated the community on 10 attributes that make for "successful rural communities." Sisters scored high on "evidence of... Full story

Grandmother Bennett was born in 1915, and spent most of her life living in Lancaster, New Hampshire. Her four children were also born in the house where she was born, and life was beautiful.... Full story
