  • Beware unchecked HOA powers

    Michael Cooper|Updated Jul 29, 2014

In a recent letter to The Nugget (June 18, 2014), I warned Tollgate residents that a proposed amendment to the community's CC&Rs would, if approved, broadly erode members' property rights by ceding them to the neighborhood's board of directors. Whether you live in Tollgate, Crossroads, Black Butte Ranch or any other subdivision administered by a homeowners' association, the potential for a governing body to amass disproportionate power and wrest fundamental rights from its members always exists. The gateway to such abuse is... Full story

    Updated Jul 29, 2014

To the Editor: What a wonderful 2014 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show weekend! I had been a vendor of the Sisters quilt show for many years previously as a guest of a Sisters store owner. After she sold her business, we lost one of our favorite venues to sell our vintage items. We have always enjoyed the wonderful crowd and the wonderful quilts. We had also previously participated in many Antiques in the Park antique shows with the chamber. Last year I was pleased to hear about Richard Esterman pulling together many vendors for... Full story

You've noticed lately that your furry friend doesn't want to walk those two miles with you anymore, he's slowing down and you've tried hard not to notice that the black fur around his muzzle is turning white. He's been your constant companion, and it's hard to accept that at 9 years old he has become a senior. Many pet parents struggle with the realization that their furry friend is getting older. It's important to recognize the signs of aging and take measures to ensure that... Full story

The month of August brings with it the highly reliable, sometimes spectacular, Perseid meteor shower, one of the astronomical highlights of each year. The shower occurs when the earth travels through debris left behind by comet Swift-Tuttle. While these meteors can be seen from July 17 through August 24, this year's shower will peak on the night of August 12 into the early morning hours of August 13. "Grandchildren are the dots that connect the lines from generation to generation." ~ Lois Wyse ~ Summertime in Sisters, for many of us, means houseguests and family visits, as our friends and relatives come to share in the beauty and activities of Central Oregon. For those lucky enough to have them, the arrival of grandchildren often marks the highlight of the summer. • Marked by Mexico

    Kit Tosello|Updated Jul 29, 2014

There's a character in C.S. Lewis' story, "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," an awful, whiney boy named Eustace who turns into a dragon while thinking selfish thoughts. Panicked, Eustace tries to scrub off the dragon scales, and he succeeds - to a point. But there's always another layer of nasty scales under the one he just removed. Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated Jul 29, 2014

Marcia and Roy Salmon decided on their honeymoon in 1988 after visiting Sisters that they were going to live and build their dream home in the quaint little picturesque town. Most people think about building their own home rather than moving into someone else's vision of how a home should look. But the idea is usually abandoned quickly in the assumption that it would be too costly and too lengthy a process. However, the Salmons didn't let those fears stop them. They bought... Full story

  • Outlaws football camp is a 'rebirth'

    Updated Jul 29, 2014

In the words of one observer, the Outlaws Football Camp held last week represents "the rebirth of football" in Sisters. The Outlaws program has struggled in recent years, but a new coach and a renewed enthusiasm for the sport among young players is regarded as a step toward a refreshed and rehabilitated Outlaws football culture. Young players learned fundamentals from first-class college and NFL coaches. From the beginning, camp organizer Randy Gardner, who has served as an... Full story
