The Lady Outlaws cross country runners. In what has promise to become a tradition, eight members of the Sisters girls' cross country team spent three days and two nights camping, rafting and running along the scenic McKenzie River. Folks in Sisters have been living with smoky air since the middle of July when the Eyerly fire blew up, sending a smoke cloud 30,000 feet in the air, only to settle over the flatlands for days afterward. More fires have created more smoke. The good news is that, while irritating, the smoke won't cause an otherwise healthy person much harm. A job well done At 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, we all thought we had a major tragedy on our hands. The Cache Mountain fire had swept into Black Butte Ranch. The Ranch was evacuated and homes were burning. It looked like the whole northwest corner of the Ranch was going to go up in smoke. That didn't happen, thanks to some extraordinarily courageous and skillful firefighting by the Black Butte Ranch Rural Fire Protection District. A classy classic... A low rumble was heard west of Sisters this past weekend as the 13th annual High Desert Rod and Custom Car Classic returned to Sisters. Over 130 cars appeared at the Comfort Inn this year, which is down about 20 cars from last year. "I think people were worried about the fires," said club president Glenn Cummins. Jack Kinsey, Ralph Meyerdick and Vic McIntire recalled service with the Seabees in World War Two. Jack Kinsey invited a couple of old friends to Sisters last week -- friends who haven't all been together since 1946, when they were stationed in north China with the 6th Marine Division. Kinsey, Ralph Meyerdick (Sun City, California) and Vic McIntire (East Lake, Ohio) were members of the 32nd Special Battalion of Seabees -- the Navy's construction outfit, which handled tasks...
