    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Aug 2, 2005

Summer hikes led by members of Three Sisters Fellowship are continuing through August and everyone is welcome according to co-leader Kim Barry. Recent hikes into Tamolitch Pool and Obsidian Falls were magnificent, participants report. The trip into Tamolitch included 15 adults and 16 kids and provided a great opportunity to unite, said Kim Barry. Tamolitch is very kid-friendly since it is fairly level and only about four miles long, she said. In contrast, a hike around the... Full story

  • The new face of the Sisters School Board

    Updated Aug 2, 2005

In a quiet revolution, the character of the controlling majority of the Sisters School Board changed completely during the month of July. The five-member board acquired three new members who are different in significant respects from their predecessors. The last domino fell Wednesday night, July 27, when the board chose Steve Rudinsky to replace Tom Coffield, who resigned as of August 1 (see story page 1). • Freezer films

    Updated Aug 2, 2005

Feeling hot? Here’s some freezer films to cool you off. The last part of Smilla’s Sense of Snow (1997) takes place in the area surrounding the earth’s most northern community, Siorapaluk, Greenland, a few-person settlement near Qaanaaq. Last week, Qaanaaq’s daytime temperature ranged between 37 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Nights were about the same because the sun doesn’t set in Qaanaaq from mid-April until late August when the sea thaws. Qaanaaq’s average February-March temperature is minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Smilla, base... Full story

  • The living swamp

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Aug 2, 2005

Recently I had the opportunity to walk into Trout Creek Swamp. Walking into a swamp is something one must do with extreme care. Rare and fragile plants such as swamp birch, Betula glandulosa, tiny swamp cranberry, Vaccinium oxycoccos and the sundew pictured above live there. I feel a bit reluctant to even talk about this place for fear it will become too popular. Everywhere you put your foot in a swamp you are stepping on a living part of a delicate ecosystem. A wetland can be worked or loved to death. It can also be... Full story
