  • Sisters man killed in Highway 97 wreck

    Sisters resident David J. Gasiorowski, 18, died Monday, July 26, in a collision on Highway 97 about 34 miles north of Klamath Falls. According to Oregon State Police reports, Gasiorowski was driving a 1999 Lexus northbound when he drifted off onto the shoulder of the road, overcorrected and crossed into the southbound lane. The Lexus struck a 1993 Freightliner Pacific Power and Light utility vehicle. Gasiorowski was pronounced dead as he was being airlifted to St. Charles Medical Center.   • Forest Service plans jump start on salvage logging

    The Forest Service plans to get started on salvage logging of some of the area burned in 2002 Eyerly Fire before the appeals period runs out. Deschutes Forest Supervisor Leslie Weldon announced Monday, August 2, that she will sign an order allowing the salvage to move forward. That decision has created controversy among opponents of the salvage plan since it is the first time in Central Oregon that the Forest Service has used provisions of the Bush administration's Healthy Forests Act to permit such activity to start during t... Full story

(AP) -- The bodies of two climbers killed on Mount Washington in the Central Oregon Cascades were recovered Saturday by Jefferson County sheriff's deputies. He wanted the proceeds to be dedicated to construction of new Little League baseball fields in Sisters. The membership approved the idea for a five-year run and Duehren added another chairmanship to his already busy Kiwanis schedule.   • Father fights to help critically injured son

    Frank Duyshart is fighting to save his son, who remains in a coma at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend after a horrific head-on collision on Highway 20 between Sisters and Bend on Monday, June 28. Jonathan Duyshart, 21, driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, crossed the center line into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer, killing all three occupants and leaving Duyshart in critical condition.   • Bead Stampede offers 'something new'

    Jeri Buckmann, Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce Events Coordinator, was looking for something new to bring to Sisters to spice up the chamber's event schedule this summer. She struck upon the idea of a Sisters Bead Stampede "I wanted to do something different," said event coordinator Buckmann. Buckmann said she attended several bead shows with friends and was struck by the depth of interest in beadcraft. Impressed by the shows, Buckmann decided she wanted to bring one to Sisters. For two young men last week Sisters was a slow, and welcome, spot in a speedy walk. The men, who call themselves Nacho and Pepper, started north on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from Campo, Mexico, on April 25 and April 22, respectively.   • Lightning sparks fires in Sisters region

    A thunderstorm that rolled across Sisters late Sunday afternoon, August 1, dropped enough lightning strikes to start at least a couple of small blazes. None of the strikes or fires were in the immediate vicinity of the Sisters community. According to Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch, 10 fires were started by lightning from the storm in Central Oregon; two more flared up on Monday morning.     Lightning spiked from the black clouds over Black Crater west of Sisters on Wednesday, August 4, sparking a fire that covered about 1/4 acre just to the north of the mountain, according to Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch in Prineville. A pair of helicopters dropped water on the fire to hold it in check while a ground crew hiked into the fire area. The crew worked on the fire overnight.   • Death came from self-inflicted gunshot

    between Sisters and Redmond died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Adrian Grey Mattive, 41, of Redmond, was found on Thursday morning, August 5, face down near his vehicle on Bureau of Land Management land about 1/4 mile off Buckhorn Road west of Redmond, according to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports.
