  • Talking trash in City of Sisters

    Updated Aug 5, 2008

The Sisters City Council is getting ready to make a decision on who controls trash collection within the city limits. City staff is reviewing High Country Disposal's latest franchise proposal effectively taking the City of Sisters out of the refuse business (see "City mulls contracting out for refuse collection," The Nugget, June 24). One city councilor is not on board with letting this function go to an outside contractor. In a guest opinion column printed in last week's... Full story

  • Forty years of blue ribbons at the fair

    Kathryn Godsiff, Correspondent|Updated Aug 5, 2008

Entering exhibits at the Deschutes County Fair is a habit for Sisters resident, Ruth Rowe. She is one of the stalwarts who keep the long-held tradition of textile crafts alive and well, faithfully entering her embroidery projects for the past 40 years. In an era of digitized and machine-assisted handwork, Rowe, 90, holds her embroidery hoop in arthritic hands, creating linens decorated with fine stitching. Her family cherishes the finished projects; each generation lays their... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 08/06/2008

    Updated Aug 5, 2008

To the Editor: Thank you Lon Kellstrom! Lon Kellstrom seems to be the only City Council member who is looking out for the business and families of this town. The important subject that I am referring to is the city wanting to give up our trash collecting to HCD (High Country Disposal). By the City of Sisters collecting our own garbage, we make a lucrative income. By giving it to HCD, then HCD is the profiteer. It makes no sense that the city would even give this much thought. I can tell you who has given this a lot of... Full story

  • SCUBA divers rescue lost discs

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Aug 5, 2008

Sisters' disc golf course has one heck of a water trap. It's not a designed part of the course, which is located near SOAR on land belonging to the Sisters School District. It's a half-acre fenced irrigation holding pond for Sisters High School. Dozens of errant discs plunge into the pond - but they're not lost forever. Byron and Jared Leisek are avid disc golf players - and certified SCUBA divers. Disc golf impresario Kathy Kemper-Green met Byron at lunch one day and dis... Full story

  • Seen a spotted skunk recently?

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Aug 5, 2008

When was the last time you observed a spotted skunk climbing out of your woodpile with a mouse in its mouth, or leaving the hen house with egg on its face? Yeah, me too. It's been a l-o-n-g time. When I first arrived in Central Oregon, back in the early 1950s, I lived with Dean and Lily Hollinshead in what is now Hollinshead Park in Bend, and spotted skunks were underfoot year-round. Now all we see are striped skunks. In addition to fine Tennessee Walkers, Dean and Lily had a small Holstein dairy, and it seemed whenever they... Full story
