The Green Ridge Fire is holding at 420 acres and 30 percent containment. Estimated date for full containment has been pushed back to Saturday, August 10. The fire was active on Monday, keeping air tankers busy, their efforts focused on the south end of the fire. Spot fires that occurred on Sunday were all lined on Monday, and firefighters were to begin mop-up operations on the north side of the fire Wednesday, and re-establish new lines on the east and south sides of the fire. The dog days of summer cooled off a bit for the Sisters Doggie Dash & Stroll on Saturday at Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD), organized by Friends of the Library (FOSL). The perfect spot for doggie dashing or strolling is down the local trail systems at SPRD. It is situated among some gorgeous scenery with great trails for hikers, runners or mountain-bikers. The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration holds its 18th annual Country Fair and Art Show on Saturday, August 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The art show and silent auction begin with a reception on Friday evening, August 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. The country fair is old-fashioned fun for the entire family. The Sisters Dance Academy was invited to perform at the Deschutes County Fair this year on Wednesday, July 31. The dance studio took some 30 dancers to perform pieces that they had performed in their dance recital in June. One of the group numbers showcased eight dancers who recently attended the Sisters Dance Academy's week-long summer dance camp performing a contemporary, hip-hop and Broadway dance. Incoming freshman are invited to come to Sisters High School on Tuesday, September 3 for new-student orientation. The orientation will run from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. The purpose of the orientation is to make the transition to Sisters High School a positive one. The Sisters Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Saturday, August 24, at a catered banquet at The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. The Sisters community is invited to help celebrate. For 20 years, the store has provided a place for folks to recycle unwanted clothing and housewares, purchase quality used goods, and volunteer. Boy Scouts from Troop 139 in Sisters recently completed an eight-day canoe trip in Bowron Lake Provincial Park in northern British Columbia, Canada. The canoe circuit consists of a series of 12 lakes interconnected by numerous waterways and portages for a total distance of 116 kilometers. The Sisters Planning Commission moved the Sisters Eagle Airport annexation process one step closer to completion Wednesday night with a 5-0 vote to amend the city urban growth boundary (UGB) and comprehensive plan map to include the 34.3-acre airport land as urban area reserve. Haley Noel Finney (aka Webb), a 2012 University of Oregon graduate, and a 2008 Sisters High School graduate, will attend Willamette University Law School beginning August 21. The Deschutes County Fair is touted as having something for everyone. The Nugget visited on Friday afternoon, dodging the rain that fell on Sisters. The 4-H exhibit hall had static displays ranging from beekeeping to vegetables, robotics to livestock. If there's one bird in Sisters Country that can bring smiles one moment and frowns the next, it's our big and bold northern flicker. The photo above shows a male enjoying a repast of suet cake they enjoy in winter - and if you continue to provide this favorite flicker food - in summer as well. Born May 28, 1905 in Sarasota, Florida, Emma and her family moved to Hanford, California, while she was still a young child. She grew up on the family dairy farm and later met a young law student named Clarence Rust. She said she married him to protect the money she loaned him to get through law school! John was born and raised in Sisters. He was considered to be one of the best bareback riders in the Pacific Northwest. He won the All-Around at Sisters Rodeo in 1974, 1977, 1980 and 1984. He was a very successful bareback rider and bulldogger and won rodeos all over the country, including the Champion Bareback Riding title at "The World's Toughest Rodeo" at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Today fire managers continued to have trouble with the southeast corner of the fire, with crews chasing and confining spot fires in that upper portion of the fire area.
