    A homeless man in Sisters, possibly with mental illness, may be on a collision course with police. Less than two weeks ago, the indigent was given a citation for trespassing at a local business after being told several times not to loiter on the premises. He has had several confrontations with sheriff's deputies who have attempted to inform him of the law.   • City signs cell tower lease

    The City of Sisters has inked a deal with Spectrasite Wireless Towers, Inc. to allow construction of a cell phone tower near the city's sewer treatment plant. The Sisters City Council agreed to a lease at their Thursday, August 9, meeting. Spectrasite will pay $1,500 per month base rent and an additional $500 per month for each service provider that takes a space on the pole.     - Deputies arrested a Sisters man for driving under the influence and reckless driving after he allegedly plowed through a fence along Indian Ford Road. The 20-year-old reportedly had a blood-alcohol count of .15 percent. - A woman and a man were riding horseback along Highway 242 west of town when the woman hailed a passing driver and shouted at him to call police as her companion was harassing her.     A group of Civil War-era re-enactors gave visitors a glimpse of the early history of the region at Camp Polk Meadow Preserve on Saturday, August 4. The re-enactors portrayed an advance scouting party for Company "A," First Oregon Volunteers, the army contingent that established Camp Polk in 1865 to protect the builders of the Santiam Wagon Road.   • Forest Service approves new Suttle Lake Resort

    The Sisters Ranger District has given the green light to development of a new 10,000-square-foot lodge and new cabins at Suttle Lake Resort. A decision notice released August 1 detailed plans for development of the resort and for restoration of the surrounding forest.     A 21-year-old woman was killed crossing Highway 20 when she ran into the path of an oncoming vehicle. A 21-year-old woman from Ireland was killed Monday afternoon, August 6, when she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Highway 20 approximately six miles east of Sisters.   • Firefighters put their lives on the line

    The summer population of Camp Sherman swelled in recent weeks, but it wasn't due to tourism. Seven hundred firefighters and an additional two hundred support personnel made camp near the Metolius River to battle the Bald Peter fire on the Warm Springs Reservation.     State Representative Ben Westlund, R-Tumalo, will seek another term in the Oregon Legislature if the term limits law is overturned. The 1992 law mandating term limits was ruled unconstitutional by a Marion County judge on July 20; that ruling is currently under appeal.   • Teens arrested after stolen car crashes

    Sheriff's deputies arrested two teens after they allegedly crashed a stolen 1993 Acura Integra in the Crossroads subdivision. The driver, Kyle Elliot Holcomb, 19, of Portland, was arrested on multiple warrants and a count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The passenger, Joshua Marshall Reznick, 18, of Crossroads, was arrested on one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.     Folks in Sisters can enjoy a Saturday full of old-fashioned fun and entertainment at the Country Fair at the Sisters Episcopal Church on Saturday, August 11. Musicians from near and far came to Sisters last week for the the 13th annual Booher Family Music Camp, held at the Sisters Community Church.     As Sisters School Board members travel around the region looking at school designs, some citizens have expressed concern that taxpayers are funding these trips through bond money. That is not the case, according to school board chair Heather Wester. School board members pay their own expenses on such trips, she said.
