On several levels, the City of Sisters is trying to get a handle on the right approach to regulate temporary business activities in the downtown commercial district. The planning commission is in the process of dealing with an appeal of their ruling on a temporary use permit (TUP) for Celia Hung and Richard Esterman's proposed 180-day-per-year use of the vacant lot next to Sno Cap Drive In as a recurring tented small-vendor venue. The planning commission will address that issue on Thursday, August 21, at their 6:30 p.m.... Full story

To the Editor: Would the person to whom I loaned Don Rowe's model woodpecker to chase away flickers and other house wreckers, please return it? I can't remember who you are, and I can't find the woodpecker around my place. Someone is pleading with me to use it. Many thanks, Jim Anderson To the Editor: The editorial on August 5, "City must set clear policy goals," was spot-on and I sure hope our city leaders will take it to heart. It was one of the best editorials I have read in a long time as it addresses... Full story
To date, not much has been said about the inaccurate data used to further the hotly debated multi-use paved path from Sisters to Black Butte Ranch, or the issues of access, safety and tranquility at Black Butte Ranch. Details from two Black Butte Ranch (BBR) surveys conducted in the spring of 2012 and fall of 2013 were inaccurately reported in multiple public meetings by BBR staff, and official responses by the Forest Service in their environmental assessment relied on inaccurate data and misrepresented BBR board decisions.... Every summer, hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) use Sisters as a place to resupply, rest and connect with the non-trail world. You might notice them; they're the ones with the dusty boots and backpacks, heading for the library, the post office or the laundromat. They slip in and out of town, eager to get back on the trail and, if they're thru-hiking, to complete those last 650 miles to the Canadian border. Each of these hikers has a story and a trail name and a reason fo... Full story
