According to school administrator/teacher Bill Lewis, the school is still accepting student applications, as it can house a maximum of 40 students for the 2007-08 school year. • Fair draws treasure hunters to Sisters

    Updated Aug 22, 2007

The folks who stage the Sisters Antique Faire want to make sure it improves every year. This year was a time of both refinement and growth for the event. Although the number of vendors who set up their booths at Village Green Park last Saturday and Sunday was about the same as last year, the quality of goods was higher and the larger crowds attracted prove that quality will always bring out the shoppers. "The crowds seem to be quite a bit larger this year," said Jeri... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 08/22/2007

    Updated Aug 22, 2007

To the Editor: Once again The Nugget, through Mr. Duerrmeyer's articles, seems to be siding with development interests in criticizing the Sisters City Council. In the article entitled "Jefferson County snipes at city," Mr. Duerrmeyer sets the tone with: "Jefferson Co. has stepped into the growing lineup of those who don't like the way the City of Sisters does business." There is consistency in this "lineup:" primarily pro-development interests who see Sisters' policies impeding profits or revenues in the case of Jefferson... Full story

  • Cowboys and Smokin' Guns at rodeo dinner

    Updated Aug 22, 2007

The grand finale for the Sisters Rodeo Association's season played out on Saturday evening. The tables were groaning with prime rib and other pure American delicacies. And as is only appropriate for a cowboy event there was whiskey, wine and women. The event was a thank-you to all the volunteers who make the Sisters Rodeo possible. The spirit of cooperation that is the trademark of the Sisters Rodeo Association has made the event the most successfully run all-volunteer rodeo... Full story

  • City staffers save lost dog, reunite it with owner

    Updated Aug 22, 2007

A happy ending to what could have been a sad story emerged from Sisters City Hall this week. Gertie, a young dachshund, found her home and family through the diligence and love of city staff. Gertie was brought to city hall after being found alongside the highway. "A couple of days ago our building official (Lisa Weishoff) came in with this little dachshund and said that a friend of hers found it on the summit of Santiam Pass," said Carol Jenkins, planning secretary. "She... Full story

  • 'Forest Ladies' enjoy wonders of nature

    Updated Aug 22, 2007

The Forest Ladies love the Oregon wilds. The Metolius Basin is one of those treasured places, and a week ago Monday the ladies gathered there on the Deschutes Basin Land Trust property near Camp Sherman for a picnic. "It is a pity that more people don't use this piece of land," said Fran Hogan, who has been spending time on the Metolius for longer than many of us have been alive. "It is beautiful here. The main thing that is lacking to make it perfect is a picnic table. I... Full story

    Rongi Yost, Correspondent|Updated Aug 22, 2007

Nik Goertzen has taken over the reins as the girls varsity soccer coach at Sisters High School. He is thrilled with the opportunity to live and work in the area. Goertzen spent vacations and holidays at Camp Sherman from the time he was three years old and always told himself if he ever got a job opportunity in Sisters he'd take it. • Sisters snowboarder offers tale of hope

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Aug 22, 2007

Snowboard racer Chris Klug has enjoyed many triumphs, including a bronze medal finish in parallel giant snowboarding at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. His story would be inspiring enough if it was just a tale of a young man realizing his dreams in a sport he loves. But fate decreed that Chris Klug's story would be a much more profound tale of triumph. Klug was diagnosed in the 1990s with PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis), a rare degenerative bile duct condition which... Full story

  • District spends $1.7 million plus to update schools

    Updated Aug 22, 2007

Students at Sisters elementary and middle schools will start the school year on September 4 with some changes to their buildings. Almost $1.7 million has been spent over the summer on improvements. In May the Sisters School District issued $2.1 million in 15-year full faith and credit obligations to fund these projects. That bond issue has been controversial (see related story, page 14). However, the work itself has passed without much notice. The vast majority of work and money is being poured into the elementary school.... Full story

  • Sisters CPA sells thriving practice

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Aug 22, 2007

Scott Lamoreaux is one of Sisters' business success stories. He moved here in 1992 and hung out his shingle as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He had experience working for national accounting firms but came to a relatively remote and rural area and started pretty much from scratch, with no clients. "I essentially had none," he said. "I had a few that I brought from California but as far as clients here, I didn't have any." That didn't last long. With a reputation for... Full story
