Eastbound traffic is being stopped at Santiam Junction and westbound traffic is being stopped at Santiam Pass.     Air quality remains at unhealthy smoke levels Tuesday morning, August 29. Residents are advised to drink extra water during heavy smoke conditions both to stay hydrated and to keep the throat and breathing passages moist. Higher winds out of the west will likely bring some relief from smoke during the afternoon hours and into Wednesday.   • School delayed by fire's impacts

    Disrupted by the Milli Fire, Sisters schools have delayed the start of the academic year. In a message to the district, Superintendent Curt School announced a plan to push back the start of school. Currently, 1st-9th grades will start on August 30; 10th-12th grades start on August 31.   • Body of Sisters man recovered at Suttle Lake

    The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office reported on Tuesday, August 22, that the body of Ben Hendrickson, the Sisters resident who was last seen August 12 at Blue Bay Campground at Suttle Lake, was recovered from the lake on Tuesday morning. The sheriff reports that no foul play is suspected and alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the drowning.     The Sisters School District (SSD) and the City of Sisters have reached a compromise regarding the removal of trees on school district property. As part of the current parking lot remodel project at Sisters Elementary School, a number of large ponderosa pine trees were recently removed from a public right-of-way located between East Cascade Avenue and the school parking lot.     To the Editor: In your August 27 article regarding school bond projects ("Work continues on school bond projects," page 1) you mentioned the consideration of a "turf" field at Reed Stadium. I am unclear as to your meaning as "turf" refers to grass. And Reed Stadium has the best grass "turf" football field in the tri-counties.   • Rodeo provides money for community support

    Sisters Rodeo Association is vested in supporting its community and many communities throughout Oregon. On August 12, at the annual appreciation party for volunteers, the rodeo raised $4,000 for Warfighter Outfitters with auction of a table hand-crafted by veteran Gary Conner, a member of both organizations.     A team of four Hampshire Fire and Rescue firefighters visited Sisters for two weeks as part of a U.S./UK exchange program with the Sisters-Camp Sherman RFPD.
