  • Fires still burn around Sisters Country

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Aug 31, 2010

Cool, wet weather over the weekend and into Monday helped clear out smoke that plagued Sisters last week. The Scott Mountain Fire burning 15 miles to the west inundated the region with smoke on Wednesday and Thursday, but that smoke abated with the change in weather. The fire is 3,300 acres in size and is 30 percent contained. Firefighters are not attacking the fire directly. According to the incident command team, "the Scott Mountain fire, located in the Mt. Washington... Full story

    Updated Aug 31, 2010

Three candidates for Sisters City Council - Sharlene Weed, Wendy Holzman and Jacki Shepardson - are pledging to keep their campaign expenditures to a minimum and they don't want any campaign contributions. Instead, they are asking for those who support them to make a donation to the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank "in honor" of their campaigns. The candidates, while aligned in their views, say they are not running as a slate. At a campaign kickoff party at Angeline's Bakery & Café on Friday, Weed and Holzman said they would... Full story

  • Schools escape new round of cuts

    Updated Aug 31, 2010

The budget ax has fallen again. This time it missed the Sisters School District. A combination of stimulus monies from the federal government and a firm pledge from the governor and the Oregon State Legislature has given the school districts around the state, including Sisters, a little breathing room. The Sisters School District can begin the school year with no fear of further budget cuts until December at the earliest. On August 27 Governor Kulongoski announced another... Full story

  • Freedom of religion is for all of us

    Andrew Gorayeb|Updated Aug 31, 2010

I am writing to you as the ninth anniversary of my sister Cathy's murder at the World Trade Center approaches. She happened to be attending a breakfast meeting at Windows on the World (the restaurant on the top floor of Tower 1) that day and as bad luck would have it, she became trapped above the point of impact and was incinerated. Every year, I get to watch her die on television again and again. We have never found any trace of her. I've been reading and watching a lot of discussion about a proposed "mosque" at "ground... Full story

  • New choir teacher invites aspiring singers

    Kit Tosello|Updated Aug 31, 2010

When Rick Johnson graduated from high school in Houston, Texas, his choir teacher posed a compelling question: where did he see himself in 10 years? His answer: living in Oregon, married, with children and a dog, inspiring young kids with music. Johnson doesn't yet have children, nor has he limited himself to one dog. But according to plan, Johnson takes his place this week as the new choir director for both Sisters High School and Sisters Middle School. In doing so, he's... Full story

  • Rescuers pull deer from the drink

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Aug 31, 2010

A deer in the swimming pool is not a good thing. That's exactly what Melanie Petterson thought when her son Rory called her to say there was one in the pool at her home at the east end of the Sisters Airport. "You have to be kidding!" she said. "Nope, it's for real, mom," Rory confirmed. Melanie then turned to the secretaries in the Sisters High School office where she was signing up her daughter Jacobie for athletics, and told them about it. No one thought it was serious and... Full story

  • Wasco Lake is a lesser known local trail destination

    Craig Eisenbeis|Updated Aug 31, 2010

Most local hikers seem to be familiar with Wasco Lake only by virtue of a trail sign pointing away from the much more popular Canyon Creek Meadows loop trail. In reality, Wasco Lake is a nice little destination itself. The trail takes off from the Jack Lake Trailhead; it's relatively easy and is less than a five-mile round trip. Instead of following the recommended clockwise loop to Canyon Creek Meadows, take the counterclockwise direction when the trail forks in the vicinity... Full story

  • The sounds of summer

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Aug 31, 2010

I love it! The phone calls and e-mails are coming in about strange, screeching calls piercing the peaceful night sky. Jodi Creed sent me this one (edited for brevity): "Three nights ago I was beckoned outside by the call of a great horned owl (GHO) very close to our house. He (or she) was being answered by a more distant owl with a slightly longer call (but still a great horned) and once by an even more distant owl. "All of a sudden, during the conversation between the first... Full story

    Kit Tosello|Updated Aug 31, 2010

For Tori DeLeone, this summer was never a blank canvas. DeLeone spent an intensive four weeks at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, one of the country's oldest and most respected art schools, expanding her portfolio and her ideas for the future. It was an exhausting schedule. Most days, classes began... Full story

  • Sawing error costs Green at Oregon State Fair

    Updated Aug 31, 2010

David Green of Sisters was the lumberjack to beat going into Friday's elimination round of the STIHL Timbersports Collegiate Championship on opening weekend of the Oregon State Fair in Salem. But on the very first event, fate stepped in during the stock saw challenge and Green got a "DQ" (disqualification) penalty for crossing the line and using more than his allotted four inches of wood, receiving zero points and all but ending his chance of winning the event. His times were fast and consistent in the other segments: the... Full story
