    After long and sometimes contentious debate, the Sisters Park & Recreation Board of Directors decided Tuesday, August 25, to cancel after-school, Teen Center and summer drop-in programs that cost the district but do not bring in revenue in order to concentrate efforts and energy on programs that do bring in revenue to the financially troubled district.   • BBR fire department seeks increased levy

    Voters at Black Butte Ranch will decide in the September 15 election whether to boost funding for the BBR fire district. The fire district is seeking to replace the current 90 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation, which expires next year, with a new levy of $1.56 per $1,000. According to Fire Chief Dan Tucker, the larger levy is necessary to keep pace with staff, equipment and maintenance costs with an essentially static tax base. Why not just throw them on the ground in the first place and then step on them? Why would somebody want to ruin a new bench just for the sake of being stupid? It really shows ignorance.     Sisters Art Works will host "Harmony: A Duet of Glass and Nature" at the Sisters Art Works gallery at 204 W.   • Sunburst Retreat wins approval

    Hank Queen's application for a conditional-use permit to operate a guest lodge called Sunburst Retreat east of Sisters has been approved by the Deschutes County Planning Department, but with significant stipulations and conditions. Hearings Officer Kenneth D. Helm issued the ruling on August 26. The decision becomes final 12 days after that date, unless appealed by a party of interest.     Manhattan Short Film Festival has announced the 10 finalists, representing nine countries, whose films will be judged by a worldwide audience. The 10 short films will be screened 532 times in 173 cities across five continents, September 20-27. The festival is a showcase for new film directors, now in its 12th year. Sisters gets back eight seasoned players including three seniors: Jake Lasken; Chris Waters; and Kevin Marquardt.   • Local woman remembers Dominick Dunne

    "He was an enigma, and he loved Camp Sherman," said Joyce Osika. Dominick Dunne, film producer, journalist, author, husband and father, found a home away from home in Camp Sherman. He stayed in Cabin #5 at Twin View Resort, then owned by Osika and her husband Nick.     Hoodoo Mountain Resort looked like a Harley Davidson rally last Sunday when approximately 250 riders drove into the parking lot for the annual Bikers for Babies event. The Metolius River Forest Homeowners Association (MRFHA) is seeking reform of the fee structure for private homes on Forest Service land.     Jennifer Heiden has a lifelong habit of taking dance classes. So when Central Oregon Community College (COCC) offered a belly dance class in Sisters, she had to sign up.
