  • Downed plane takes backroads to airport

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Sep 3, 1997

A twin-engine Apache PA-23 airplane that made a forced landing in Metolius Meadows Saturday, August 23, continued its odyssey last week. Plane owner Holbrook Maslen and some local friends towed the plane behind a pickup truck from Camp Sherman on backroads over Green Ridge to the Sisters airport on Tuesday, August 26. Maslen decided to tow the plane out instead of attempting a take-off from the meadow amid houses and trees. According to Jefferson County Deputy Dave Blann, who... Full story

    Jo Zucker|Updated Sep 3, 1997

Sisters schools have received a financial shot in the arm that will help them upgrade computers, provide the elementary and middle schools with a tele-phone/intercom system and make necessary building repairs. The Sisters School District is the beneficiary of a one-time Classroom Needs Grant from the state Department of Education totaling between $101,000 and $102,000. According to Superintendent Steve Swisher, about $24 or $25,000 will be used to repair the elementary and middle school roofs. Swisher said that $5,000 to... Full story

  • Sisters police bust traveler for forgery

    Updated Sep 3, 1997

Jim Cornelius Charles Edward Richardson of Lowell, Oregon, was just one of many travelers who stopped in Sisters last week to do a little shopping. But, according to Sisters Police, the checks and credit card he used were not his. Police arrested Richardson, 44, on August 29, on charges of forgery and theft after he allegedly used checks and a credit card he found in a purse at a boat landing on the McKenzie River to buy tires and a meal in Sisters. According to police reports, staff at the Les Schwab Taylor Tire Center... Full story

    Jo Zucker|Updated Sep 3, 1997

School began on Tuesday, September 2, with something new and different for everyone. Both the elementary and middle schools will have a new calendar, with the last day of classes is June 30. High school classes end June 4. Kindergarten through eighth grade students have longer winter and spring breaks and a shorter summer break. And both schools will be connected to the high school via the internet. The elementary school loses the sixth grade, but will have four brand, new classrooms when they are completed in November.... Full story

  • Convict wants to put Deschutes DA on trial

    Eric Dolson|Updated Sep 3, 1997

From his cell in the federal correctional institution in Sheridan, Oregon, Brent Steven Sherman, Sr. has apparently given Deschutes County District Attorney Michael Dugan and the State of Oregon yet another lesson in the law. In the last two years, Sherman, who once had an office in Sisters, has bested prosecutors in Deschutes County and Clatsop County while defending himself against criminal charges. Now, Sherman, again representing himself, is on the offensive. Brent Sherman alleges that D.A. Dugan has never complied with... Full story

  • Taylor defends location of Sisters tire store

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Sep 3, 1997

Jerry Taylor believes his Les Schwab-affiliated tire store fills a need in the Sisters community, and he promises that the store he intends to build at the western edge of Sisters will be "a class act." Taylor presented his plans for the proposed 60,000-square-foot Taylor Tire Center to the Sisters City Council on Thursday, August 28. The council has no direct say about the planned store, since it is outside the city limits under county jurisdiction. But because it is inside... Full story

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Sep 3, 1997

A 17-year-old Mt. Angel youth was killed Tuesday, August 26, in a collision on Highway 20 between Suttle Lake and Santiam Pass. According to Oregon State Police reports, Robert Hawkins was heading eastbound at about 6 p.m. when he lost control of his pickup truck at Milepost 83 and collided with a westbound tractor-trailer rig. • Letters, letters, letters

    Updated Sep 3, 1997

    * * * To the Editor: This letter is in response to Warren Campbell M.D., Tim Clasen and Julie Spor on the "tire store debate." First, Julie's points seem to largely sum up how I feel about Dr. Campbell's arrogant, judgmental, non-tolerant and condescending attitude. How dare you condescend to us as only a tourist town. Did you actually say where millions of Californians spend their money? Millions? Share your wealth? We have "wealth" here in our community. Why have we not heard any complaints from the llama ranch, next to... Full story

  •     Real Soup

    Melissa Ward|Updated Sep 3, 1997

On temperance There are certain seasonal changes that occur so resoundingly, so abruptly and unequivocally that it seems to my visual mind that there is a cloaked messenger standing on the horizon somewhere near, applying a soft striker to an enormous sun shaped gong. Then again, perhaps it is just my alarm clock, grimly set for the orderly routine of very early rise and hopefully reasonable bed time. School has started. Summer ended with that first dark, dream-twisting buzz, bringing all the sleepers hurtling, collectively,... Full story

  • Flylines

    John Judy|Updated Sep 3, 1997

When the wristwatch alarm went off I wasn't ready to get up. It felt as if I had just gone to bed. Early mornings are the part of Steelheading I will never get used to. I curled up in the sleeping bag for a moment contemplating what would happen if I just stayed there. That was dangerous territory; I could nod off in an instant whether I meant to or not. I rolled over and opened my eyes to look up at the stars. The constellations where well around the sky from where they had been when I went to bed. I'd had some rest. I... Full story
