With some 50 bands and individual artists playing at 11 venues through town, the Sisters Folk Festival returns to bring a wide array of roots-based music to the community this weekend. The festival is marking a comeback year, after being forced to cancel due to hazardous smoke conditions associated with the Milli Fire last summer. That was a blow to the whole community, but the festival is ready to put that experience in the rearview mirror. "There were many impacts including missing a great celebration of community and... Now she's forging a new bond with Sisters - as principal of the district's only public elementary school. Warburg is impressed by the relationship between local schools and the general community. "It's a very special quality," she told The Nugget. "We have retired scientists that are investing in the students. We have people in the community who are pas... Full story

To the Editor: The August 29 edition of The Nugget carried an insightful article by Dr. Robert Collins on science education in Sisters, citing the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). He rightfully pointed out that science education in Sisters is strong and that it is well supported by the Sisters community. I would like to point out that the Sisters community has also shown tremendous support for its students who wish to pursue STEM education after they graduate from Sisters High School.... Full story
Lyricist and singer-songwriter Dar Williams will play next weekend's Sisters Folk Festival for the first time as a headliner. Williams is a well-known singer-songwriter who has been performing and writing songs most of her life. "I don't know how well being a singer-songwriter would work without the combination of writing a story and then performing that story," Williams told The Nugget. Williams' most recent album, "Emerald," was released a few years ago, but many of the... Full story

Youngblood grew up in the Portland area with her family. When she was 16 years old, she left her family and went over the mountains to Sisters to be a part of the Americana Project. High-intensity exercise conjures the image of aggressive, athletic body types running sprints and jumping on boxes. It evokes the burning sensation of heavy-duty exercise efforts that leave you panting and reeling. High-intensity exercise does include hard effort, but the intensity is all relative to your current status. High intensity exercise offers heart and blood vessel health and astounding results in little time compared to more traditionalistic exercises. It can be done at all ability levels. High intensity interval... Full story
The Lady Outlaws fell in four sets to Crook County (CC) on Tuesday, August 28, in their pre-season opener, but bounced back two days later with a straight-set win at home over Marist. On Tuesday, the first-home-game jitters got the best of the Outlaws, and they lost to the visiting Cowgirls with scores of 21-25, 27-25, 17-25, and 23-25. The first two games were very back-and-forth with both teams committing unforced errors, and having a difficult time getting into a rhythm.... Full story
Thanks to the support of Sisters Country voters and some additional financial good fortune, Sisters students are returning to school with considerably improved facilities. Sisters Middle School is the last of the three schools to undergo renovation funded by $10.7 million in voter-approved bonds, augmented by a $4 million state grant. The school district decided last year that the construction work at SMS would be too disruptive to conduct during the school year, so it was scheduled for this summer. It is now wrapping up. "I'... He stands at 5 feet 11 inches, weighs in at 185 pounds, and according to Coach Neil Fendall, he is the hardest working player on the team, both mentally and physically. He's expe... Full story
We are going to be hearing a lot about tribalism in the coming years. That's mostly because so many Americans now see solutions to their angst in joining identity clubs. Pick something about your identity - it must make you feel anxious - then go ranting and throwing stuff and lighting things on fire when the world doesn't step aside for you and your special identity. What's weird is that they often do this under a banner of unity, though the laser focus on what makes them... Full story
