A 26 year old Sisters man was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 20 near Suttle Lake, approximately 12 miles west of Sisters, on September 3. At approximately 1:42 p.m., Joshua Hignell was headed westbound on Highway 20. For unknown reasons, Hignell failed to negotiate the curve. The vehicle went first into the gravel on the right side of the highway, then, with brakes locked, headed into the oncoming lanes. Sisters-area residents raised $10,000 for wetlands restoration projects at a Ducks Unlimited fund-raiser at Cascade Meadow Ranch on August 28. According to John Daday, one of the event organizers, 95 people attended the banquet. "It was well attended and everyone enjoyed themselves," he said. Sewer lines could go in as early as February and some users could be hooked up by summer, according to Dick Nored of HGE, Inc., the engineering firm that is designing Sisters' sewer system. The sudden flow of late-summer visitors to Three Creek Lake has been hard on locally sensitive plant and wildlife habitat. Sisters Ranger District field ranger Kate Goossens reported that impatient recreationists drove their vehicles across Three Creek Lake's earthen dam on August 21 to access the Driftwood campground, which was blocked by a 70-foot-long snowbank. An 18-year-old Sisters man sustained severe injuries to his left hand in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 20 in the early hours of Friday morning, September 3. According to Deschutes County Sheriff's reports, the young man was eastbound on Highway 20 at milepost 4 east of town at about 1 a.m. when he crossed the oncoming traffic lane and hit a tree. The Ford Family Foundation, based in Roseburg, has awarded a $20,000 challenge grant to Sisters Habitat for Humanity for the purpose of building a home with a selected Habitat family. The grant represents roughly half the cost of materials necessary to build a Habitat home in Sisters. Sisters Habitat must raise a matching $20,000 in cash and in-kind contributions from individuals, churches, businesses and service groups throughout the Sisters area by February 1, 2000. Sisters students beat the state average on last year's assessment tests in reading, writing and mathematics. The tests, administered in the third, fifth, eighth and 10th grades, measure students' progress toward meeting state benchmark standards for a Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM).
