  • Gospel Hour shows draw the faithful

    Shawn Strannigan|Updated Sep 17, 2002

Free Gospel Hour shows were held at the Sisters Jazz Festival's Village Green and Comfort Inn stages at 10 a.m. Sunday morning. Crowds of festival attendees and local worshipers flocked to the two venues to hear jazz-infused versions of classic hymns and other songs of faith. The Chicago 6 played at Comfort Inn, while the Night Blooming Jazzmen performed at the Village Green. It wasn't strictly a performance, since the audience members were handed song sheets and encouraged to join in. Band leader Chet Jaeger kept the... Full story

  • Outlaw runners steal the show at Cascade

    Updated Sep 17, 2002

The Outlaws celebrate their outstanding performance at the Darrell Deedon Invitational at Cascade High School. A hot day and hectic schedule did nothing to deter the Outlaws cross country teams as three of the four squads raced to team victories at the Darrell Deedon Invitational at Cascade High School Thursday, September 12. Temperatures hovered near 90 degrees on the flat, treeless course, so coach Charlie Kanzig wasn't expecting stellar performances from his teams. Yet the varsity girls, varsity boys, and junior varsity... Full story

  • COIC examines Cache Mountain Fire

    Craig F. Eisenbeis|Updated Sep 17, 2002

Tom Fitzpatrick addresses participants in a tour of the Cache Mountain fire site. On July 23 lightning struck a remote area on Cache Mountain, and local forest and fire officials knew within minutes that they had a serious problem on their hands. What they didn't expect was how difficult it would be to convey the sense of urgency to agencies outside the local area. Last week, the Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC) conducted a public debriefing on the Cache Mountain Fire. Scott Aycock, Program Coordinator for... Full story

  • Schools get financial break at polls

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Sep 17, 2002

Sisters schools have dodged $150,000 in cuts as voters approved Ballot Measure 19 on Tuesday, September 17. The measure converts Oregon's education endowment fund to an "education stability fund" and allows the legislature to tap the fund for $150 million to shore up badly depleted school budgets. Sisters schools included the Measure 19 funds in the budget last spring. If the measure had not passed, the district would have had to make cuts. "It's good news that it passed,"... Full story

  • Park plan gets new life

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Sep 17, 2002

Public restrooms on Ash Street may be a reality by next summer after all, if a tentative grant approval holds up. The Central Oregon Community Investment Board (COCIB) has announced a tentative grant of $34,600 to the City of Sisters for the proposed Ash Sreet Park in Sisters. According to city officials, those funds, with a match from the city and $25,000 from the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce’s restroom fund will be used for construction of eight public restrooms.... Full story

  • Opinion A holiday for patriots?

    Captain Craig F. Eisenbeis, U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.)|Updated Sep 17, 2002

In commemorating the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, the nation observed the first Patriot's Day -- an entirely appropriate thing to do. What seems a bit puzzling are the noises some folks are making about having the day proclaimed as a national holiday. Excuse me? Can you imagine a national holiday for, say, Pearl Harbor Day? One television network conducted a poll on the question. To the public's credit, 60 percent opposed the idea. The flip side is that, apparently, 40 percent like the idea. Are they... Full story

Cyclists prepare to head into Sisters from their high school base camp. Hosting 1,800 cyclists and dozens of support people is no small task. Yet Cycle Oregon representatives and participants gave Sisters enthusiastic praise for a job well done as the cyclists pedaled out of town Friday, September 13 on the way to their finish in Florence. After months of planning and preparation by a team of local volunteers, things really began happening Tuesday evening as the first trucks arrived with eight large tents and all the... Full story
