    Updated Sep 25, 2007

Eric Porter, the new Planning and Community Development Director, will meet with the development community on Thursday, October 11, at 8 a.m. at Sisters City Hall. The city's response to the concerns of area developers by scheduling a timely meeting has pleased many of those who are critical of past city performance. The focus of the meeting will center on the... Full story

  • New power poles go up near Tollgate

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Sep 25, 2007

Work crews installed a new steel power pole at the Tollgate substation earlier this month. The erection of the tower was part of an approximately $5 million project undertaken by Central Electric Cooperative (CEC) to upgrade transmission lines running through Tollgate to Black Butte Ranch. It is part of a larger Redmond-Sisters upgrade, which has been dogged with controversy as landowners have fought against having taller steel poles installed on their land. The project has... Full story

There is also a used motor oil storage container that can be pumped out for hauling. The facility also has an office for an... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 09/26/2007

    Updated Sep 25, 2007

To the Editor: With all due respect to Mr. Morgan, it seems he is doing more damage than good in our school district. Even if he "wins" in his efforts in litigation, there must be a better way to effect positive change than his current tactics. It is hard to imagine how he could have run for the school board and expected to be elected with the way he has handled these important issues. No one likes a bully, Mr. Morgan. Eric T. Wagner Editor's note: This letter was originally received as a comment on the article "Schools face... Full story

  • Tour of Artists Studios attracts art lovers

    Updated Sep 25, 2007

There's something magical about watching an artist as he or she creates. Hearing the story about the inspiration that led to a work, seeing the paint before it drys or touching the clay before it hardens, all bring the work alive. Last weekend's Sisters' Tour of Artists Studios (STArS) provided area art enthusiasts with just this opportunity. Seventeen local artists scattered from Plainview in the east to Camp Sherman in the west welcomed the public into their studios for... Full story

  • Sisters barrel racer brings home buckle

    Kathryn Godsiff, Correspondent|Updated Sep 25, 2007

Sisters barrel racer Shorty Hurtley brought home a buckle and a fancy halter from the finals at the Cantastic Summer Barrel Racing Series. She wears the buckle with pride; her horse, Diggen Diamond or Diggens, as she fondly calls him, won't have anything to do with his halter. It's a lovely leather creation with a cowhide noseband. The words "Cantastic 2007" are burned into the hide, and Hurtley figures the smell of the burned hide spooks Diggens. So for now, the halter hangs... Full story

  • Poodles party in park

    Updated Sep 25, 2007

Sisters' inaugural poodle party was held earlier this month, and it was a hit with the Sisters poodle population. The party was fully catered and provided a fun-filled atmosphere for the pets and their masters, who proved that they are not elitists by inviting at least one terrier and a pointer. The party was a first-time event for most of the guests. "I have never been to a poodle party before, and it makes me think we should be in Central Park (in New York City). I have had lots and lots of poodles, but this is the first... Full story

  • Shoot 'Em Up: It's just what is says - and it's a hoot

    Updated Sep 25, 2007

Okay, look: The movie "Shoot 'Em Up" is not for everybody. It's rated "R" and deserves it. "R plus" is more like it. It is violent, and then more violent. It is rude; it is crude; it is a story of good bad men and bad good men and hookers with a heart. If any of this makes you squeamish, go see something else. I loved it. What a hoot. It's coming to Sisters this week. Teens in the row near us were offended at our laughter. I don't think they got the joke. This movie is a spoof, a great spoof, of all of those films about... Full story

The former Camp Sherman resident is now the subject of a new, independent documentary produced by a film crew from Australia. Dunne's subjects are usually the rich and famous who have become embroiled in the legal system. Now, it is Dunne himself who is in the spotlight. The idea for the documentary germinated in the mind of a young film director named Kirsty de Garis from Sydney, Australia. She... Full story

The crowd that descended on Sisters for the second rodeo of the season was young, alive and vibrant. It was pure roots rodeo. The show combined a sense of history with the brashness of youth.
