    Updated Sep 27, 2011

To the Editor: In response to the two letters to the editor concerning roundabouts in Sisters, let me share the following: the residents of Sisters are neither bizarre nor deranged as one writer suggested. We spent countless meetings researching the best options at the intersections in town, and ALL options were considered. After numerous public hearings and discussion, the community decided that the use of roundabouts was the best solution for the residents of Sisters, and for the thru-traffic on Highway 20. Can an... Full story

  • Stars over Sisters

    Cami Kornowski|Updated Sep 27, 2011

Draco the dragon may breathe fire early in October. Some planetary scientists think that on the evening of October 8 the earth will pass through a particularly dense portion of space debris left behind by comet Giacobini-Zinner. The result could be a grand display of meteors that might top 600 per hour. That's the good news. The bad news is two-fold: the timing of the shower's peak favors observers in Europe and the Middle East, and the light from a waxing gibbous moon will tend to wash out all but the brightest meteors.... Full story

  • Marion Lake offers berries and spectacular views

    Craig Eisenbeis|Updated Sep 27, 2011

Marion Lake is a little farther away than some hikes, but it's still less than an hour from Sisters. Actually, there are a number of ways to reach Marion Lake by trail. The most common hiking route is a short 2.3-mile jaunt from an access road to the north. Much longer routes from the south tally 12 to 14 miles - one way. We opted for something in between. The Pine Ridge trail, from Camp Pioneer, is a "just right" hike of about 10 miles round trip. Camp Pioneer, on the shore... Full story

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Sep 27, 2011

Chuck Stahn was gassing up his car in the evening at a lighted Madras gas station, when suddenly a woman in the next bay let out a scream, pointing to a very large "bug" on the gas station pavement. Chuck scooped it. Before he could get it into a container, he discovered -painfully - that it had its sharp, hypodermic-like mouth part shoved into his finger. He let out a yell, disconnected the beast, and then, using marvelous self control, put it in a juice jug without killing... Full story

  • Sisters schools fine-tune intervention programs

    Updated Sep 27, 2011

Focused, individualized intervention is often the key to helping a student in trouble - or headed for trouble - academically or behaviorally. Timely individualized data is the challenge for early intervention. To get this data, teachers need to continue to refine and implement measurement methods that are quick and easy to administer, and easy to interpret. The school board workshop Wednesday concentrated on the specific tools that each school is now using or will be using, first to identify and then to resolve student... Full story
