  • Cloverdale fire district boosts rating

    More water, more volunteers and better training have translated into a better rating for the Cloverdale Rural Fire Protection District from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The new rating of #6 (up from #8) should mean reduced fire insurance premiums for district residents, according to fire chief Chuck Cable. Residents should see their rates drop by an average of 15 to 25 percent, Cable said. The boost in insurance rating is the crowning achievement of a five-year effort... Full story

  • Sisters to gather in Sisters this weekend

    The second annual Sisters in Sisters celebration is set for Friday, October 1, through Sunday, October 3. The event kicks off with a Friday night welcome dinner, fashion show, and keynote address by motivational speaker, Sheri Rose Shepherd. On Saturday there is an afternoon wine and cheese tasting, western barbecue, and entertainment by the Booher Family's Diamond B Chuckwagon Gang.   • Sisters teacher publishes test trainer

    Sisters students and their counterparts statewide can get help with the math problem-solving section of their state assessment tests through a new book by Sisters High School math teacher Jim Harrison. "Preparing for the Oregon State CIM Problem Solving Test" is now available, but only through schools. "This is only sold to schools," Harrison noted.   • Kiwanis honor service

    Jack Berry took the reins as the 1999-2000 president of the Sisters Kiwanis Club at an installation banquet at Camp Sherman's Community Hall on Sunday, September 26. Berry urged members of the service club to work closely with the Sisters School District in developing community facilities as part of the schools' master plan so that Kiwanis can "be a significant player in what is in store for our community down the road."   • Flu vaccinations available at fire hall

    The Deschutes County Health Department will offer vaccinations for flu and pneumococcal disease October 6 at Sisters Fire Hall between 1:30 and 4 p.m. Tetanus boosters for adults will also be available. Flu, or influenza, immunizations will cost $10; pneumococcal disease $17; and tetanus $10. The best time to receive the influenza vaccine is between September and December, according to the health department. A new shot is needed each year.     * * * To the Editor: I was shocked by the article in The Nugget ("Forest Service begins fall burning," page 3, September 22) regarding Forest Service prescribed burns planned for the end of September. It stated that they are timing burns "to take advantage of current extreme fire conditions." The Glaze Meadow burn is expected to have two- to 15-foot flames, surrounded by a 10- to 20-foot "black line" of pre-burned material as a deterrent to escape.   • COCC opens new computer lab

    A new computer lab is open in Sisters, according to Celeste Douville, director of Central Oregon Community College's community education program. Eleven new Hewlett-Packard (HP) computers are now available for classes (which started this week) and student use. "The new computers are part of the college's program to provide students with the latest equipment and train them for today's technology and job market," Douville said.   • Motorists escape serious injury

    A collision between a car and a minivan on Highway 20 at the entrance to Suttle Lake Resort snarled traffic on Sunday, September 26, but left those involved unhurt. The wreck occurred shortly after 5 p.m. and partially blocked both lanes of travel. Traffic backed up to a point about a mile west of the Camp Sherman junction, but police were able to route cars around the wreck on the shoulder. In an earlier incident, a 22-year-old Bend man and his pregnant 23-year-old passenger escaped serious injury in a single vehicle wreck... Full story
