    A Forest Service prescribed burn in the Metolius Research Natural Area about three miles north of Camp Sherman escaped last Thursday and became a wildfire. The blaze roared up Green Ridge, threatening the lookout tower on top of the ridge, as firefighters attacked a blaze that was driven by gusty winds.     For decades, Sisters City Council races have been modest affairs: a little advertising, a lot of door-knocking, a candidate forum. Those days are gone, at least for the 2008 election.     Rodney and Geneieve MacKenzie of Sisters announce the marriage of their daughter Jocelyn to Tyler Trask. Tyler is the son of Roxane Trask of Sisters and Terry Trask of Bend, and graduated from SHS in 2005; he recently joined the U.S. Navy.   • Schools push for local option tax

    The campaign to convince voters to continue the Sisters School District's "local option" tax is ramping up. The school district is seeking a continuation of the 75 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation tax that has sustained the district over the past four years.     Sisters Rodeo chose Cassie Sanders as the 2009 Sisters Rodeo Queen on Sunday, September 28. Twenty-two-year-old Cassie calls Prineville home. She has been a past rodeo queen in Spray and at Crooked River Roundup. She was the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association Queen in 2007, which includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and Northern California. She is also legally deaf.   • Bank gives boost to Sisters schools

    Bank of the Cascades has just given the Sisters School District a $5,000 annual shot in the arm. Each year, the commitment includes $1,000 each for Sisters High School, Sisters Middle School and Sisters Elementary School to be used for academic programs as determined by the principal of each school. It also includes $2,000 for athletic programs at Sisters High School to be determined by the athletic director. The total commitment is for $15,000.     The Community Choir of Sisters has begun preparing for its annual Christmas concert. Choir Director George Larson proudly points out that the organization is dedicated to providing community entertainment and a performance venue for Sisters area vocalists.     The Sisters City Council on September 25 voted four to one to turn over its trash-collection business to High Country Disposal (HCD). The city has been reviewing High Country Disposal's franchise proposals since the beginning of the year. The one dissenting vote was cast by councilor Lon Kellstrom.     Sisters District Ranger Bill Anthony said his agency is very concerned about losing control of a prescribed burn in the Metolius Basin last Thursday. A 31-acre burn in the Metolius Research Natural Area sparked over into an adjoining section of forest, igniting a wildfire that climbed Green Ridge and grew to more than 500 acres.     Big mistakes were costly in the Outlaws 14-0 loss at home against Junction City (JC). Sisters was intercepted four times and had six fumbles in the contest.     The boys soccer team had a week of extremes. The Outlaws shut out Pleasant Hill 3-0 in their league opener on Monday, September 22, and then lost in a 6-0 shutout to Marist two days later.     Susanna Harrison is the new coordinator for the ASPIRE Program at Sisters High School. The program helps prepare students for careers.
