There have been some tensions this deer hunting season between those who live in the woods around Sisters and those who hunt there. A hunter shot a buck near the entrance to the Toll- gate subdivision at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, prompting a Tollgate resident to call the sheriff's office. A deputy responded, only to watch the hunter tag his legally taken deer. According to the Oregon State Police, the agency which handles game law enforcement, a hunter is not... Full story
Two alleged thieves stole about $1,000 in gear from the Fly Fisher's Place in Sisters, then asked for directions to a good fishing hole. They were caught with their waders down. Justin J. Hayes, 18, and Hans Kengle, 17, both of Springfield, Oregon, were at the store on September 30. According to store owner Jeff Perin, one of the two asked an employee to demonstrate a fly rod. The employee and that young man went out back to cast. The other apparently loaded items from the store into the trunk of their car. But they also... Full story
More than 200 women from all over the United States and some foreign lands joined in meetings, outdoor recreation, conversation and banquets in the second annual Sisters in Sisters celebration last weekend. The Friday through Sunday schedule was crowded with events and was launched with a buffet dinner and fashion show on Friday evening. After dinner, fashions were displayed by local Sisters merchants under the "big top" tent at the Village Green. The opening evening concluded with an entertaining and often humorous keynote... It's too hot, too dry and too dusty. Deer hunters, over opening weekend October 2-3, paid the price of Indian Summer. Success rates were low in the Metolius Unit near Sisters, with only 9 percent of tags being filled. That's down from 15 percent last year, according to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) biologist Steven George. But those figures need to be kept in perspective, George noted. Last year, cool temperatures and high country snow just before the opener... Full story
The elusive and enigmatic Canada lynx may roam in the forests above Sisters. Surveys completed recently in the Deschutes National Forest generated at least eight possible lynx "hits" on specialized scratching pads, according to Sisters Ranger District wildlife biologist Laurie Turner. "Something came to the pads placed by biologists," Turner reported. "We have hair samples." The small pads are crafted from squares of shag carpet with a series of short, sharp nails protruding through the shag. Biologists nail the pads to a... Full story
Brightly painted little Austin Healey sports cars purred through the streets of town and toured the local highways as three Pacific Northwest Clubs gathered in Sisters for their annual Northwest Meet. They came rolling in from all across Washington and Oregon and from as far away as British Columbia, with more than 50 of the vintage British sporters produced from the mid-1940s to 1967. According to drivers, the Austin Healey is the kind of car people fell in love with when the... Full story
Steelhead and Chinook salmon may swim in Squaw Creek again - and not too long from now. According to Forest Service fish biologist Mike Riehle, experiments will be conducted this winter to introduce fish above Pelton and Round Butte dams to see how well they swim through the reservoir. A two-year stream monitoring program with the help of Sisters students has been integral to creating a restoration plan for the Squaw Creek watershed, which includes Indian Ford Creek. Students... * * * To the Editor: First, let me address The Nugget loudly and clearly. When Eric Dolson calls Roy Manbeck and asks for a hard copy of the letter to the editor I had faxed to The Nugget so their scanner could accurately reproduce it for the paper, I expected to see just that, an accurate copy of my letter. I did not. The editor knows full well how simple deletions, changes and "mistakes" can alter, in subtle ways, how a letter reads. With six mistakes, I claim the editor is actively trying to irritate me into silence. I... Full story
* * * To the Editor: Shortly after 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Octo-ber 5, a rifle shot rang out just west of Squawback Woods on forestry land. Al-though I didn't search out the source and target of the shot, there is no doubt in my mind that a hunter had taken the life of a buck - practically at our back door. I have no quarrel with the hunter. It is deer season and he or she was presumably hunting legally. My quarrel is with some homeowners in Squawback Woods (and elsewhere, I'm sure). They are feeding the deer and drawing them... Full story
As part of an effort to restore Glaze Meadow near Black Butte Ranch, the Sisters Ranger District will soon begin enforcing a ban of off-road vehicles from the meadow. The cornerstone of the Glaze Meadow rehabilitation project was the district's first-ever prescribed burn in a meadow habitat. Although the fire set a precedent in the district, Forest Service biologists say the project requires a multi-faceted approach to undo the impact of more than 100 years of cattle grazing. According to district ecologist Maret Pajutee,... Full story
Lady Outlaws win 3, lose 2 at Seaside The Lady Outlaws volleyball team got a good look at some of the top teams in the state at the Seaside Invitational tournament on Saturday, October 9. The girls came away knowing they'll have to step up their play to be competitive in the playoffs. "It was a little rough," said team co-captain Kendle Deaderick. "(The teams) were tough and it's just showing that we're going to have to work harder than we're used to." The Lady Outlaws,... Full story
Sheriff's deputies arrested a 23-year-old Sisters man on rape and sex abuse charges for an incident that allegedly occurred on October 7. According to sheriff's office reports, a 15-year-old girl went to the home of Jason Alan Melton in Sisters, where she allegedly drank beer that Melton had in the house. The girl told deputies that she did not remember much of what happened, but that she woke up the next morning and believed she had been taken advantage of sexually. The girl was examined at St. Charles Medical Center.... Full story
