  • Voter registration deadline nears

    The last day to register to vote in the November 5 election is Tuesday, October 15. Voter registration cards must be postmarked by that date. Voter registration cards are available at all banks, motor vehicle offices, city halls, rural fire halls, libraries, post offices and the Deschutes County Clerk's Office. Ballots will be mailed on Friday, October 18. The ballot includes votes on the governorship, Senate, county commission and several initiatives.... Full story

  • Outlaws run fast in Philomath meet

    In a race billed as having the finest field of teams outside the state meet, the Sisters cross country teams showed their competitiveness as the girls won and the boys finished fifth at the Paul Mariman Timbertown Invitational held at Philomath Saturday, October 5. The girls gave credence to their number one ranking among 3A teams, winning convincingly over six other Top 10 squads behind personal best times from Lindsay Chick, Resa Hodson, Anna Morton and Rikki Glick.   • Outlaw Cafe nixed by school district

    Plans for a student-run cafe in Sisters have been shelved by the school district in the face of budget cuts. "With the additional cuts we no longer have the capacity to provide the operation off-site for the cafe concept," School Superintendent Steve Swisher told Community Action Team of Sisters Director Lorri Craig in a letter last month.   • Cowboy poet featured at Paulina Springs

    Leon Flick, a cowboy poet from Plush, will be featured at Paulina Springs Book Company's upcoming Cowboy Poetry Night. The event will be held at the book store on Saturday, October 12, at 7 p.m. Flick's book, "A Cow's Tail for a Compass," won a 2001 Book of the Year award from the Academy of Western Artists.   • Girls win two volleyball matches

    The Sisters girls volleyball team won both matches last week to improve its league record to 3-1 -- 9-7 overall. The Lady Outlaws visited Sweet Home on Tuesday, October 1, and defeated the Huskies in four games, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16.   • Sisters girls shine at gymnastics tourney

    Tani Chick and Annie Mutchler of Sisters placed first and second in a regional gymnastics tourney held in Bend on Saturday, October 5. Chick, 11, took top honors in the junior age division in the eight-team tournament, turning in a 35.5 overall score. "That's an extremely high score," said Coach Lexy Reinholt.   • Chamber manager resigns

    Clyde Stryker, Executive Director of the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce, resigned his post on Monday, October 7. Stryker presented his letter of resignation to past President Peter Storton. Storton was president when Stryker was hired nearly two years ago. According to Storton, Stryker cited labor issues, but "he chose not to expound on that."     Pastor Frank Fraga with pictures of Honduras trip. Sisters pastor Frank Fraga traveled throughout Honduras last August, preaching the gospel and encouraging the locals. Fraga returned to Sisters with a mission -- to raise $14,000 for a church building in village of Chapalapa.   • Library celebrates preschool 'Farm Daze'

    The Sisters Library offers its Preschool Parade program "Farm Daze" on Thursday, October 10, at 10:30 a.m. Each Preschool Parade session features stories, finger rhymes, lap jogs, tickles and movement skills appropriate for children ages three through six years old.   • Escaped burn chars 190 acres

    A prescribed burn north of Camp Sherman burst out of its control lines last week, consuming 190 acres before firefighters put a ring of fire lines around it over the weekend. "The unit was burned Wednesday (October 9) and it slopped over out of the control area Thursday afternoon," said Lorri Heath of the Sisters Ranger District. A man later tried to drag the deer off into the woods and tag it with a Metolius Unit tag (there seems to have been some confusion over the concept of hunting).
