    Jim Cornelius|Updated Oct 13, 1998

After years of trying, the City of Sisters will move to a new city hall - in another three years. The Sisters City Council approved the purchase of the Multnomah Press building at 204 West Adams Street on Thursday, October 8. As part of the deal, the city will trade the former bowling alley building next door for $375,000. Multnomah Press is currently leasing that building. The city will use the $219,000 in its city hall fund and borrow $36,000 from its equipment reserve fund... Full story

A Deschutes County Sheriff's deputy arrested James Webster Stockton, 22, on Friday October 9, on four counts of second-degree rape. According to sheriff's office reports, Stockton had an on-going sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl. The sheriff's office launched an investigation on September 23, when the girl's grandmother allegedly reported that she had been told Stockton was "sleeping with" her granddaughter. Stockton had apparently been living at the girl's home for several months. Deputies had arrested him on... Full story

  • SOAR seeks tax base from voters

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Oct 13, 1998

The Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation is asking voters for a recreation district tax base of approximately $100,000. The recreation district tax on the November 3 ballot would be 22 cents per $1,000 of assessed property valuation, or $22 per year for a $100,000 house. The district would basically cover the Sisters School District, excluding Black Butte Ranch, which has its own recreation facilities and programs. According to SOAR Director Tom Coffield, the... Full story

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Oct 13, 1998

Gordon Petrie is defending a letter he signed that threatens to cost him his position on the Sisters City Council. A local political action committee, Citizens for Cooperative Urban Planning, petitioned for Petrie's recall after he signed a letter sent by four Sisters couples to the Oregon Economic Development Department (OCDD) requesting that the agency deny Sisters $1.25 million in grants to help fund Sisters' sewer project. Thepetitioners believe Petrie's action was an effo... Full story

  • Sisters School Board explores new diplomas

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Oct 13, 1998

Sisters schools will soon tie high school diplomas to performance standards. The Sisters School Board agreed in their Monday, October 12, meeting that students should have to meet consistent standards to graduate - rather than just show up at school to collect a diploma. But there is a long debate ahead about where those standards should be set. Board members agreed that the schools should start immediately to honor students who pass all the state benchmark tests to achieve a... Full story

  • Fish rescue planned

    Stephen Shunk|Updated Oct 13, 1998

Squaw Creek Irrigation District staff and volunteers plan to rescue fish stranded in their canals and return them to district ponds following their seasonal shut-down later this month. State law requires a permit to transport live fish, but irrigation district Manager Marc Thalacker says the district doesn't need one since the fish are being moved within district waters. "These are fish in our system and we're just returning them to our system," Thalacker said. "We do a systematic shut-down, canal by canal," he said. "We... Full story

  • Sisters Library needs more volunteers

    Patrick Faughnan|Updated Oct 13, 1998

The Sisters Library needs volunteers to staff the branch through its new expanded hours. The library is now open on Mondays and future plans include opening Sundays and some evenings. More hours and attrition, with some volunteers moving away or traveling during the winter season, has created a shortage, according to Sisters librarian Peg Bermel. Volunteers perform a variety of services including shelving and checking shelves to ensure that books are filed correctly. Angie Rands has been a volunteer at the Sisters library... Full story

  • Fly lines

    John Judy|Updated Oct 13, 1998

There are magical moments when steelhead just seem to appear on the end of your line. This habit of showing up unexpected has earned steelhead the nickname "ghost fish." A good steelheader continues to fish no matter what the luck and in spite of conditions. He knows that he is just one cast away from a fish. But when you've never caught a steelhead it is very difficult to escape the feeling that something is wrong. You start second guessing. You feel as if you need to do something different - change the fly, change the water... Full story

  • Letters, letters, letters

    Updated Oct 13, 1998

    * * * To the Editor: Regarding all the hype surrounding SOAR, I would like to express my feelings on the subject: I am SORE with SOAR. One of the recent advertisements in The Nugget depicted a boat full of young people having a wonderful day boating down a pristine river. Gaiety, fun loving exchange between the participants, was the order of the day. The alternative to this beautiful scene, were news clippings depicting rampant killing and violence by some distraught young person. The theme of the advertisement seemed to be... Full story
