    Hunting season is here. Though the opening of deer season has passed, there will be hunters in the woods at various times through the fall. Although most hunters are cautious and safe, there are some who in the fervor of the moment use less than perfect judgment.   • Senator Wyden takes on health care

    Senator Ron Wyden (D.-Oregon) took on a health care system he thinks is badly broken during a visit to Sisters last week. Wyden stopped for several hours in Sisters last Wednesday, October 10, to speak at a luncheon organized by the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce and to speak at Sisters High School (see related story, page 1).     As the year 1997 rolled around, it found our library system in big trouble. The county bean counters had cut the system down to bare bones, so deeply that Michael Gaston, the newly hired Library Director, must have wondered what he would do to keep it going.   • Wreck blocks Highway 20 east of Sisters

    A 19-year-old Hines woman was seriously hurt in a two-vehicle wreck on Highway 20 just east of Sisters at 12:35 p.m., on Friday, October 12. According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, Tomas Aniceto Garcia was waiting to turn his 1994 Dodge pickup truck onto Jordan Road when the crash occurred. Witnesses said Aniceto Garcia had signaled his turn and was stopped in the eastbound travel lane waiting for westbound traffic on Highway 20 to clear so he could turn.
