  • Council passes provisional tax on marijuana

    Updated Oct 28, 2014

On a 4-0 vote Thursday the Sisters City Council passed a preemptive 15-percent tax on the sale of legal recreational marijuana in the city - even though the sale of recreational marijuana in the city, state, and the nation is currently illegal. This unusual tactic was adopted ahead of the November 4 election in case Measure 91 passes. Measure 91 would legalize the sale of recreational marijuana in the state. Sale and possession would remain a federal crime. The council - absent McKibben Womack - was acting on advice from... Full story

  • Fix to streetlights expected next month

    Updated Oct 28, 2014

A fix is coming to bring Sisters' new streetlights into compliance with the City's "dark skies" ordinance. Under that ordinance, lights are supposed to be shielded to cast their light downward to avoid light pollution that interferes with enjoyment of Sisters Country's signature star-filled sky. The streetlights were installed by the Oregon Department of Transportation as part of the Cascade Avenue renovation project this year. "We had a bit of a delay because the ODOT team ... were pursuing solutions that were not... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 10/29/2014

    Updated Oct 28, 2014

What a shame to kill a cougar after its natural game. People shouldn't try to raise goats/small livestock up against forest/rural land. ODFW just loves killing cougars and bears, while California and Washington tranquilize and move the animals. Bob Meyers ••• To the Editor: Oregon does not have 5,000, 6,000 or 7,000 cougar. Truth is, we just don't know how many cougar we have. What Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) are not telling you is that they also believe we many have only 1,284 cougar, and... Full story

Diane Goble, Bonnie Malone, Gary Miller and Susan Stafford|Updated Oct 28, 2014

It is important for Sisters voters to understand there are two distinctly different marijuana-related measures on the ballot this year. Local Measure 9-101 is specific to the city of Sisters and asks simply whether to permit legally licensed medical marijuana dispensaries to be located within the city limits. State Measure 91 asks a totally different question - shall the recreational use of marijuana be allowed in the state of Oregon, in addition to the already-allowed medical uses. As members of the city-appointed committee... Full story

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Oct 28, 2014

Sloshy mud and steady rainfall do not typically translate into personal records on cross-country courses, but Aria Blumm is anything but typical. The senior runner took the lead from the gun and never looked back on her way to a personal-best 5,000-meters time of 19:29, well over a minute ahead of last year's winner, Breanna Wright of Cottage Grove. Expectations were high for Blumm after she placed third at last year's 3,000-meter race at the OSAA 4A Track and Field... Full story
