    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2006

The Sisters City Council, like many of the citizens it represents, doesn't want the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to build a passing lane just west of town. On Thursday night, the council passed a resolution with a 4-1 vote to oppose the project. However, it does not appear that the resolution will have much effect. At the 14-minute mark Newport scored his second goal with a nice assist from Dominique DeLeone, and the Outlaws took a 2-0 lead. Twenty minutes in, DeLeone passed to Newport, and Newport dished it off... Full story

  • Oregon Country revisited -Newberry Crater

    Tom Worcester|Updated Oct 31, 2006

Central Oregon is well-known for its scenic wonders, many of which are associated with the volcanic activity that at one time caused great outpourings of smoke and lava onto the surrounding plateaus. An immense feature that rarely fails to have a humbling effect when viewed for the first time is Newberry Crater, one of the world's largest calderas, situated about 25 miles south of Bend. It was of Newberry that Dr. Thomas Condon, noted Oregon geologist, once remarked: "When I first visited that huge caldera, I had the... Full story

  • How we vote

    Updated Oct 31, 2006

Governor: No endorsement. Governor Ted Kulongoski has not been a leader, and he does not deserve to keep the job. Ron Saxton's demagogic slide to the right makes us distrust the direction of his leadership. Oregon needs a real change of leadership, which is why we supported the campaign of Ben Westlund. We hope we have that opportunity again. State Representative, District 53: Bill A. Smith (see The Nugget, October 25). U.S. House of Representatives: Greg Walden. Deschutes County Commissioners: Position 1: Dennis Luke.... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 11/01/2006

    Updated Oct 31, 2006

To the Editor, This letter is in response to the October 25 letter to the editor regarding the sheriff's ballot measures 9-40 and 9-41. The intent of this letter is not to ask for a yes or no vote but to give accurate information as to the quality of service Tollgate has received from the sheriff's department. Like many communities, we sometimes have a speeding problem. When contacting the sheriff's department, I have never received a "Sorry…private roads…can't help!" What I have received was a personal call from the she... Full story

    Updated Oct 31, 2006

  • Changing the nature of using nature

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Oct 31, 2006

There was a time - in my lifetime, actually - when anyone wanting wood to burn for the winter, all they had to do was drive just a few miles from town and cut a full season's supply - and it wasn't necessary to obtain a permit. But not anymore. There was a time when anyone could hunt, fish, hike, peddle a bike, drive a motorcycle or snowmobile anywhere they wanted. Not anymore. There was a time when anyone could hike the entire Cascade range without worrying about where to camp, where to build a fire - or whether he or she ha... Full story
