  • Hemp harvest underway east of Sisters

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Nov 1, 2016

The folks who are waiting for the noise to die down from the agricultural fans fighting off frost on 30 acres of industrial hemp east of Sisters will have to wait a bit for quiet nights. Matt Cyrus told The Nugget last week that the harvest on a couple of parcels in the Cloverdale Road area will wrap up "in a week or two." "This stuff is all one plant at a time," he said. "It's all hand-harvesting." The Cyrus family planted about 30 acres total in what may become a... Full story

  • A hunting story

    Craig Rullman|Updated Nov 1, 2016

Last week I went elk-hunting with some friends, out past Hampton, in the big and mostly empty desert and juniper country. We were an odd collection of hunters, precisely the kind of guys that columnist Victor Davis Hanson calls "alienated Americans." Which is to say, slightly cynical, brushed by, but mostly tuned out from election hysterics, from popular culture, and harboring a kind of bemused pessimism about what the future holds. For us, hunting is both religion and... Full story

  • Henderson for County Commissioner

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

From the national level down to the local level, the public's faith in its government institutions is severely abraded. Perhaps the most important duty of a public official these days is to act in a manner that shores up that wavering faith. For that reason, voters should elect Phil Henderson Deschutes County Commissioner. Henderson's background and experience offer an opportunity for the commissioners to connect more fully with the private sector, and his commitment to extensive and consistent public outreach bodes well for... Full story

  • Your vote is hallowed ground

    John Baldwin|Updated Nov 1, 2016

In just over one week, the legal residents of this nation will send a message to their governing members and to the world as to their collective level of satisfaction with the status quo. If uninfringed, that message will likely spell the beginning of the end for limitless congressional terms, complicated personal taxation, and illegal immigration. If allowed to run its true course, that message will return the judicial and congressional branches of the United States toward a pro-America, pro-Constitutional heading.... Full story

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

To the Editor: I, for one, will be so glad when the Cyrus family gets their hemp crop in and they can turn off their fans and helicopters. I'm exhausted. Judy Bull •••• To the Editor: Thanks to Craig Rullman for his thoughtful and informative response to the recent "Looking Outward" column "Just Look at the Facts." In a country that has become so bitterly divided politically, I think we are all simply waiting for honest and balanced political candidates male or female to help bring this country together... Full story

Sisters offense had several players selected to all-league teams. Brady Wessel (junior) earned first-team honors as guard for the second consecutive year. Wessel was wi... Full story

  • Outlaws run to District title

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Nov 1, 2016

When the starting-gun fired at Lane Community College Thursday morning for the Sky-Em District girls race, Junction City's Shayla Solomon shot to the lead, hoping to thwart any challengers. Anna Bartlett and Sophie Borders had a different notion: slowly chip away at that lead and make a decisive move in the middle of the race to take the command themselves. Their plan worked to perfection, and the pair finished 1-2 on the way to Sisters' sixth straight District cross-country... Full story

  • Stars over Sisters

    Rylee Funk|Updated Nov 1, 2016

Though the weather is getting colder as winter approaches, a clear night sky won't fail to impress. Astronomically speaking, November is probably best known for the annual Leonid meteor shower that occurs mid-month. What is particularly noteworthy about this shower is that it has produced some of the greatest meteor displays ever seen. These meteors are associated with a trail of dust and ice left behind by comet Temple-Tuttle. When the earth arrives at a point in its orbit... Full story

    Steve Kadel|Updated Nov 1, 2016

Jeff Fought developed an affection for golf early in life during outings with relatives, including his grandmother. "It brought our family together," he said. "Those were special times, and we had real-life conversations going down the fairway. Golf was such a social element." He enjoyed early success, winning the Oregon state junior title and placing second in the Oregon state amateur tournament. But his goal of joining the PGA tour never quite came true, despite his efforts... Full story

  • Fear and change

    Dan Glode|Updated Nov 1, 2016

We treat people as gentlemen not because they are, but because we are. - Steve Glode My late father used the above expression often. I don't think he invented it but I heard it a lot as a kid. We used to have spirited political discussions around the dinner table, but his bottom line was always we were to be gentlemen in all our dealings - regardless of how different our views were from others and regardless of how they conducted themselves. This mantra has come into play with me countless times as my career evolved from inne... Full story

  • Lower Black Butte Trail perfect for "shoulder season" hiking

    Craig Eisenbeis|Updated Nov 1, 2016

With winter weather fast approaching, and with early snow already staking a claim at higher elevations, this is a good time to think about alternatives for this "shoulder" portion of the hiking season. Four years ago last month, volunteers put the finishing touches on a new hiking trail on Black Butte. The "new" trail, however, was actually the re-engineering of a very old one. Black Butte has been used as a principal Central Oregon fire lookout since 1910; and, back in those... Full story
