Rain and snow came too thick and fast for Forest Service crews who are trying to burn up the brush piles along Highway 20. Fire crews needed some precipitation so that burn piles wouldn't flame too hot and intense, scorching the soil beneath and spreading to other forest undergrowth. Wet weather last week rang the death knell for fire season on private lands. On Wednesday October 27, the Central Oregon District of the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) lifted restrictions and terminated fire season. The lifted restrictions apply to private forest lands both inside and outside of Rural Fire Protection Districts. The Sisters Outlaws disposed of the Woodburn Bulldogs 46-16 on October 29. Sisters' varsity unit played in only 27 offensive plays; but that was enough to deal with Woodburn. Locust Street will be narrower and more winding where it runs into the new Coyote Springs subdivision. The Sisters City Council, in its Thursday, October 28, meeting, approved the tapering of the pavement from 36 feet to 24 feet, with a separated multi-use path running along the west side of the street. Motorists only had a couple of months this year to take in the magnificent scenery along the McKenzie Highway (Highway 242). The scenic highway was closed by the Oregon Department of Transportation on Thursday, October 28, after an autumn storm brought snow to the Sisters country. The road was open for only 90 days, which is the shortest open period on record. The previous record was 120 days, set in 1979. The road wasn't opened until July 29 this year, a record late opening. Sisters' U-12 boys' teams competed against each other for their final game of the season. Kallberg beat Hoyt's 6-1. Both teams were fierce and aggressive all throughout the season and looked forward to the final face-off against each other. Kallberg managed to score many points with a strong front line. The Lady Outlaws volleyball team beat a strong Molalla squad 15-3, 15-12 Thursday, October 28, to wrap up its season with a 13-1 record. While the Outlaws football team rumbles toward another run at a state title, Sisters' sixth and seventh graders have quietly put together an undefeated record. The young players went 5-0 this season against middle school teams from throughout Central Oregon, even downing a tough Trinity Lutheran squad 22-18. Three students were busted for drugs at Sisters High School last week, in unrelated incidents. The most serious charges were filed against Zachary Mulholland, 15. Byline Rachel Beck earned her third trip to the state cross country meet after her second place finish at the district meet held at Salem's Bush Park on Friday, October 29. Beck toured the 5,000- meter course in 20:20, second only to Jeane Goff of Cascade who is one of the favorites to win the state title. Goff was clocked in 19:02. Local firm may battle state A misunderstanding worth $75,000 may land a new Sisters business and two government agencies in court. Timothy Rote, owner of Northwest Telemarketing, moved his company from Wilsonville to Sisters last summer. Northwest Telemarketing provides telephone marketing services. The company currently employs about 40 people in Sisters, and anticipated as many as 150 jobs at full capacity, with a payroll that could exceed $3,000,000, according to documents provided by the company. Sisters citizens are looking at everything from simply spraying the forest floor to irrigating crops of alfalfa to building a golf course or a wildlife sanctuary as uses for the effluent from Sisters' sewer treatment plant. However, the need to work within Forest Service guidelines may narrow the options for effluent disposal.
