Many have secured work before they arrive or are bringing work with them - and some simply come with a dream in their heart. The Deschutes County Planning Department website... Full story
To the Editor: After reading Liam Hughes' commentary entitled "What's a little rain?" it is obvious to me that he did not experience the Columbus Day storm in 1962. I don't think he realized that the October 15, 2016, storm was predicted to have nearly the same intensity. I think that played a huge role in the empty... Full story

In the last 20 years, or so, things have been going on out there in the wild world of nature that both concerns and bewilders science. The condition of Earth's atmosphere and climate, are, of course, the biggest concerns that make us wonder what's really going on, and how long it will be before the Earth's ecosystems become unraveled. The science supporting climate change is pretty hard to argue with. The atmosphere is warming, therefore the oceans (and other large bodies of... Full story
I have a photograph somewhere, taken from the rear seat of a British Norman Islander, of my father and uncle. My uncle, the captain on this flight between Pago Pago and the Samoan island of Ofu, is hoisting a beer and flashing a decidedly rakish smile. It simply simmers with mischief. My father is looking back at the camera in mock terror. You can't see it in the picture, but on the beach below us a gigantic tanker ship sits wrecked and rusting on the beach, half in the...
