When natural disasters strike, compassionate adventurers are the first to make ready to assist. Sometimes though, the situation strikes a chord that runs deeper than compassion. Such was the case for Sisters resident David Uttley, who was on a plane making his way to the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, the morning after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the city. Uttley was raised in Haiti, the son of missionary parents. He lived there until age 14, one of four siblings and,... Full story

Parents will receive a letter informing them of the new curriculum... Full story
After many years of planning, and more than a year of just waiting, the landmark Glaze Forest Restoration Project finally got underway last month - only to be halted last week by unfavorable weather conditions. The work suspension was not on account of severe winter weather. In fact, it was just the opposite. Temperatures were too warm to continue the delicate work in the forest. Because of the ecological sensitivity of important riparian lands and rare plants within the... Full story
To the Editor: I want to clear up a misconception about Sisters Charter Academy of Fine Arts. It costs the residents of Sisters nothing. In fact, the academy has been a financial boon for the Sisters School District. Sisters schools receive 20 percent of the money the charter academy is paid by the Oregon Department of Education, simply by being its sponsor. The children who attend the academy would be home-schooled or attend private school if the academy were to close, and this money would no longer be benefiting Sisters... Full story

Every seven years, Bend Memorial Clinic offers its doctors a six-month sabbatical. The time off is designed to prevent burnout, to let doctors get away from medicine for a while and recharge their energy. Dr. May Fan, of Sisters, did just that. She and her family took an RV trip across the country to Maine and back, she indulged her passion for cycling, did some woodworking and took a Chinese language course. "It was very rewarding to do non-medical things for a while," she... Full story

The two yearling cougars sighted in Bill Zilk's backyard are harbingers of what's to come and, in the words of Merry Ann Moore, who lives right next door, "No good can come from this..." That is especially true for those people who continue to attract deer into their yards by feeding them. There are approximately 40 head of deer within the Sisters City Limits year-round, and they are there for only one reason: they are either unintentionally or intentionally being fed. In addition to people feeding deer, another reason we... Full story
The New Year, perhaps along with our unseasonably mild weather, appears to have inspired a number of locals to get out on the trail, either for the first time or in increased numbers.
