Many folks in Sisters Country make a point of supporting local businesses during the holiday season, doing all their Christmas shopping in town. The "shop local" movement is linked to a national effort this weekend with "Small Business Saturday" on Saturday, November 24. Math homework is on its way out in Sisters schools. But students shouldn't start celebrating liberation from hard work; expectations are actually getting higher. Hard work isn't enough. Each month a group of 18 women have gathered at the Stitchin' Post classroom to sew and donate quilts of all sizes for the needs of our community. This small but enthusiastic group is part of the East of the Cascades Quilt Guild. Their mission is to use their skill and talent to care for the needy, injured, and poor. The Lady Outlaws return seven players to their varsity squad and the four seniors, Taylor Nieri, Harley Rowe, Ellie Ricker, Lauren Cantwell, hope to lead their team to a successful league season. The Outlaws have been hard at work preparing for the season ahead. Leading the team will be returning varsity players Eli Harrison and Cole Moore. Harrison, at 6-feet-5-inches, started at wing for the Outlaws last season and averaged 17.6 points, six rebounds and two assists per game. The girls JV volleyball team wrapped up its season undefeated in league play with a 10-0 record. The Lady Outlaws dominated their league foes and swept their opponents in many matches. Ten players made up the JV roster and all were big contributors on the team. Haylie Hudson was the team's quarterback at setter and averaged 20 assists per match. Sisters students got a glimpse of how far a kid from Central Oregon can climb last week as they enjoyed a visit from Judge Alfred T. Goodwin. Goodwin, who was raised in Prineville, graduated from the University of Oregon and calls Sisters home in the summertime, is a senior federal judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, where he has served since 1971, when he was appointed to the bench by President Richard Nixon. The Belfry, on the corner of Main Avenue and Spruce Street, received its baptism last weekend with a surprise 60th birthday party for beloved Sisters artist and educator Kit Stafford. The boys JV soccer team finished league play with five wins and one tie. Overall, the Outlaws were 9-1-2. In the two games which resulted in a tie, the Outlaws had to play with a man down for more than half of the contest and were up by two goals until that point. Acosta is busy mixing paints and dabbing her palette for a colorful array of services creating nostalgic hand-painted images on glass. Sisters will kick off its holiday traditions this weekend with the annual Sisters Community Christmas Tree Lighting and Christmas Parade on Friday, November 23, and Saturday, November 24 in downtown Sisters. The "Swap Till You Drop" fundraiser benefiting "The Spirit of Christmas" toy and food drive will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, November 30, and Saturday, December 1, at the Sisters Fire Hall Community Room. Each year, Deschutes Land Trust (DLT) provides the centerpiece of the Sisters community holiday celebration: a towering fir tree. This year's tree is a 40-foot grand fir cut at the land trust's 1,200-acre Metolius Preserve near Camp Sherman. The City of Sisters is trying to figure out how to help community events in a fair and equitable manner. At Thursday's workshop the city council worked to come up with clear policies and guidelines that could be fairly applied for special-event fee waivers. They also worked on the city's ordinance. Hoodoo Ski Area will be celebrating 75 years of skiing with its own anniversary beer. The first batch of the Hodag Cascadian Dark Ale will be available for the first time at the official release party Friday, November 23 at 6 p.m. in Sisters at Three Creeks Brewing Co.
