"Yesterday (Thursday, November 20) alone, we had 46 families," Lalli reported last Friday. "We're getting families of five, six, seven. Big families. It seems like every day, someone new shows up. Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Nov 25, 2014

City public works crews removed thousands of yards of snow from Sisters streets last week in an effort to clean up after a heavy early-season snowfall. Using City plows and backhoes and some contracted trucks, crews took piled snow off Hood Avenue and Main Avenue and trucked it out to the former Oregon Department of Transportation yard at the west end of town, where it was piled in mounds. • Letters to the Editor 11/26/2014

    Updated Nov 25, 2014

To the Editor: Is this what it's come to in Sisters: small town politics at its worst? November 4, voters overwhelmingly repudiated the Brad Boyd, Wendy Holzman, Andrew Gorayeb regime of the last two years. I'm now told that councilors Holzman and Womack will vote for Councilor Frye as mayor on January 8. These councilors are openly defying the expressed will of the voters to further their own self-interests. To top that, Councilor Frye has only a few months of council experience and has never been elected! In my 14 years on... Full story

  • Of a certain age...

    Diane Goble, Correspondent|Updated Nov 25, 2014

I wanted to write something about being thankful, but I'm not feeling very thankful as I'm writing this. My life sucks right now and my mind won't go there so, for inspiration, I googled "thanksgiving quotes" and clicked on a page of picture quotes. By the time I got halfway through reading them, I was feeling much more grateful. So I thought if your life sucks right now and you're not feeling very thankful either, maybe if I wrote a bunch of thanksgiving quotes for you to read, it would improve your mood, too. So here goes.... Full story

  • An illness provides a lasting lesson in gratitude

    Katy Yoder|Updated Nov 25, 2014

A year ago, I experienced one of the most meaningful nights of my life. I only wish I could remember it better. But cancer will do that to you. It seems that I've been experiencing a bit of chemo and crisis amnesia that can erase memories as fast as I make them. There aren't a lot of photographs from the evening; my memory of it is more of a feeling than images. On November 17, 2013, a powerful posse of girlfriend power put together an event to raise money to help my family with cancer-treatment expenses. By that time, I'd... Full story

  • Jazz Choir to continue holiday tradition

    Kathryn Godsiff, Correspondent|Updated Nov 25, 2014

There will be no Magical Voices of Christmas show this year - but there will be voices raised in song. An evening of music, holiday celebration and community togetherness, the event featured music, skits and home-baked cookies at intermission. Organized by the Rotary Club of Sisters, the event was a fundraiser for the Sisters schools music programs. For various reasons, the Rotary Club decided this year to... Full story

  • Your diet can survive the holidays

    Marlys Underwood|Updated Nov 25, 2014

This time of year we must navigate the plethora of parties, cookie exchanges, wine and dessert pairings, and too much of everything. The good news is that your can make it through unscathed - and even successful - with a little diligence. My favorite thing about holiday foods is that most traditional holiday foods are, at their base, healthful and wholesome. We have lean roasted turkey and ham full of valuable protein, sweet potatoes and their boon of beta-carotene, carotenoid-rich fresh green beans, Brussel's sprouts... Full story

But to your pet every day spent with you is a holiday, and he may not be able to appreciate or understand the strange people and noises associated with holiday celebrations. The holidays should be a happy time for you and your furry friend, not a time for an emergency visit to your veterinarian. With some advance planning and a little training, you can make things more festive for Fido and Kitty and less stressful... Full story
