They expect to serve close to 250 families this year. The Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire & Ambulance Association is collecting new unwrapped gifts at the main fire station at 301 S. Elm St. in Sisters. Now that the nominally Puritan tradition of Thanksgiving is in the bag, it's interesting to look forward to the next big holiday extravaganza - Christmas - which was actually banned by those same Puritans in the 17th and 18th centuries. Fundamentalists across the spectrum never seem to tire of drawing up bans on activities they don't like, particularly the fun ones. Governor Bradford, a dour if not practical guru of the first colonial take on communal living, punished several... Full story
Since 1992 Wreaths Across America has placed holiday wreaths at veterans' graves at Arlington National Cemetery. This event began, not as a way to decorate the graves, but as a way to remember the lives of fallen soldiers. Since '92 the event has grown to more than 1,100 locations across the country. This year, Camp Polk Cemetery, Sisters' own cemetery, has been added to the list. The cemetery, in Whychus Creek Canyon next to the Camp Polk Meadow Preserve owned by the Deschutes Land Trust, has a unique history in and of... Full story
Dark skies with the threat of rain couldn't hold back the hundreds of spectators that lined both sides of Hood Avenue on Saturday for the 39th Sisters Christmas Parade sponsored by the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. This year's theme, "A Country Christmas," was the perfect fit for Sisters to show off its small-town charm. Spectators Sharon and Gary Campbell from Tumalo have been living in Central Oregon for nearly 40 years and remember being in the Sisters Rodeo and... Full story
Ashley Nordell of Sisters won the overall individual title at the Ozark Trail 100 Mile Endurance Run in Missouri on November 4. The race for first came down to the final miles, making her first mixed 100-mile race victory a real barn-burner. Nordell and runner-up Tommy Doias of Missouri were together at the final aid station with 6.5 miles to go, but Nordell prevailed, pulling away from Doias to win in 19 hours 58 minutes and 58 seconds. Doias came through in 20 hours 7... Full story
Irene Liden is stepping aside from her long-time position as director of the Sisters High Desert Chorale. Liden's not moving on; she just wants to retire to see and enjoy more of Central Oregon. She came to Sisters from San Antonio 11 years ago, fell in love with all there is to do here, and now finds herself without enough time to get to doing it. This will mark yet one more time Liden has retired in her professional career: once from 40 years at San Antonio College,... Full story
To the Editor: In the November 23 Nugget, guest columnist Terry Weygandt discusses a Facebook posting on grieving; which I'm assuming is about the presidential election results. Weygandt blames Republican-leaning news "controlling the narrative for 30 years" as the reason for Trump's win. Really?! I think that an objective review of ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, New York Times, Huffington Post, The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Dallas Morning News, The Houston Chronicle, The L.A. Times, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, etc.... Full story

There's so much hostility and injustice in this world. It came to another head following the recent presidential election, as protests turned violent. Suspicion proliferates about our president-elect and, arguably, our society as a whole. I was probably just as angry and anxious as any average American, leading me to the common question: What will resolve this division? Answer: Our leader would have to die for us. No, I'm not encouraging assassination, but let's face it: it's hard to believe that any of our leaders genuinely... Full story

Several volunteers, led by a dedicated group of three, worked hard beginning in September, planning and preparing a full Thanksgiving dinner. Starting Monday, December 12, people in Deschutes County can text their emergencies to 911. Text-to-911 is a tool for people who may not be able to speak due the nature of their emergency, such as a home-invasion robbery or an abusive partner. It will also benefit individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech disabilities. "We know calling 911 isn't always an option," said Deschutes County 911 Service District Director Steve Reinke. "When a phone call isn't possible, the Service District's Text-to-911 service... It was a chilly morning on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, but that did not deter 27 enthusiastic Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) volunteers who gathered at the Whychus Creek Overlook trailhead.
