    Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated Dec 1, 2015

Hundreds of spectators lined both sides of Main Avenue on Saturday for the 38th Sisters Christmas Parade sponsored by the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. This year's theme was "Red, White & Blue Christmas," representing our national colors for a tribute to our active military men and women, and veterans, during this Christmas season. And it was Red, White & Blue lawn chairs for Pat and Elaine Eastman from Albany as they waited for the parade to begin. "We stop in for a... Full story

  • Could get sloppy in Sisters Country

    Updated Dec 1, 2015

That winter wonderland we experienced over Thanksgiving is turning sloppy this week. A winter storm that dropped several inches of snow across the region on Tuesday, November 23, left Sisters wrapped in a mantle of white through Thanksgiving, thanks to frigid temperatures that plunged into the single digits and below zero in some spots. But that mantle of white will slough away under warmer temperatures and rain showers this week. Weather forecasts call for daytime... Full story

  • Arts are alive at elementary school

    Erin Borla|Updated Dec 1, 2015

A 2013 Oregon Arts Commission report says arts education plays a vital role in developing students who become innovators and engaged citizens. Yet many Oregon communities are still struggling to integrate arts programming into the school day. In 2012, one in five elementary-aged students in Oregon attended a school with no access to arts curriculum. Sisters Elementary School is not one of those schools. In 2014, through a community partnership with Sisters Folk Festival (SFF)... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 12/02/2015

    Updated Dec 1, 2015

To the Editor: The KZSO frequency fiasco is a perfect illustration of Murphy's law. An article in the October 28 edition of The Nugget ("KZSO loses its frequency," pg. 1) alluded to KCOE's interference "... with communications for air traffic into Redmond airport." Unable to reconcile how a commercial FM station could interfere with aviation communication, I spent hours researching KCOE and frequency assignments in the FCC database and discovered the answer. KCOE-FM's interference at 106.5 Mhz had to do with transmitter... Full story

  • Foundation awards grant to Kiwanis

    Updated Dec 1, 2015

The Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank has received a generous $5,000 grant from The Roundhouse Foundation. The grant has an important stipulation: each of the local schools will launch food drives for the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank. This "matching" aspect of the grant encourages the kids to collect lots of food and involves them in a local community-service project. Each pound of food collected will be matched by $1 from The Roundhouse Foundation. The high school Key Club (affiliated... Full story

  • Community pitches in for Thanksgiving dinner

    Updated Dec 1, 2015

The holidays are a time to come together with family and friends from near and far. There are some in Sisters that are not able to spend the holiday with loved ones, and this year, for the second year in a row, a dedicated group of volunteers stepped in to change that. On Thanksgiving Day, close to 40 Sisters Country residents spent their holiday at Sisters Community Church preparing and serving a Community Giving Thanks meal. The meal was open for anyone to attend; many come to break bread with old friends, others don't... Full story

    Rongi Yost, Correspondent|Updated Dec 1, 2015

The boys basketball squad has been hard at work in practice, and is concentrating their efforts on their core values and figuring out their individual roles. • Bull by Bull

    Judy Bull|Updated Dec 1, 2015

    • I can always tell how cold it is in the morning by my horses' tails. If their tails are tucked against their rumps it means it's below 5 degrees. When I went out to feed the day after Thanksgiving it was 6 below zero. Riddle and Riley's tails were slammed accordingly. That evening, after they sunbathed all day long, I saw them walking to the barn, tails held well away from their fat, fuzzy rumps. • Lately I've had a number of opportunities to be part of other people's day-to-day family lives. I was... Full story

  • Stars over Sisters

    Alex Burroughs|Updated Dec 1, 2015

Lying in the lower, southern sky is the constellation Fornax, which means furnace in Latin. Fornax is composed of very faint stars, making it more difficult to spot. It rises in the south around 9 p.m. and sets around 2 a.m., sitting under the constellations Eridanus and Cetus. It was added to a list of already-existing constellations by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in the mid-18th century. The constellation of Fornax has many objects to view. The Fornax... Full story

  • Stand by our values

    Dan Glode|Updated Dec 1, 2015

When you teach a man to hate and fear his brother...when you teach that those who differ from you threaten your freedom or your job or your family, then you learn to confront others not as fellow citizens but as enemies... We must admit the vanity of our false distinctions among men and learn to find our own advancement in the search for the advancement of all...We must recognize that this short life can neither be ennobled nor enriched by hatred or revenge. - Robert F. Kennedy Terrorism has struck again and with a... Full story

    Rongi Yost, Correspondent|Updated Dec 1, 2015

The girls basketball team will return seniors Olivia Stewart and Nina Horner to their varsity squad this year, and first-year-Coach Casey Pallister expects strong contributions from the duo, both in terms of skill and leadership. Stewart is an inside player who can shoot, has great inside technique, can make great plays, and is able to get to the foul line a lot. Horner has strength in the post position, but can also shoot the ball. Nina is expected to provide great defense inside, and be a force at rebounding the ball.... Full story

  • Spiders on my keyboard

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Dec 1, 2015

Talk about being at the right place at the right time. Three tiny arachnids showed up within minutes of each other just as I was sitting down to write a piece on the hacklemesh spider that also walked into my life. My wife, Sue, doesn't come into my office unless she really has to, because I will not destroy spider webs on my windows, walls, floor and ceiling. Not that she's afraid of spiders; she's not, but she's not a happy camper because I won't go along with "dusting" and... Full story

  • Help your Furry Friends this Christmas season

    Updated Dec 1, 2015

Pets are beloved members of the family for many folks in Sisters Country. For families in need, helping take care of their pets takes a major stress off their shoulders. Since its inception, the program has helped more than 6,000 animals and made th... Full story

  • A tree is lit in Sisters Country

    Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated Dec 1, 2015

A blast of arctic air plunged into Sisters days ago, bringing the first snow of the season and dropping temperatures at night to below zero. Regardless of the frigid weather, folks gathered among friends and family for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday evening at Fir Street Park. It's a Sisters tradition. Folks didn't notice the cold - they felt the warmth from the firepit, crafted by Ponderosa Forge & Ironworks, and the warm savory taste of hot chocolate, coffee and popcorn provided by the Three Sisters... Full story

    Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated Dec 1, 2015

It's time for holiday parties, preparing dinners, and setting out the holiday decorations and Christmas tree. There are suddenly a lot of potential hazards revealed to your dog, especially if he is a puppy. One of the best parts about the holidays is all the wonderful food! Remember that dogs have an exceptional sense of smell, and your dog's nose knows what's cooking and he may even beg for some of the delicious food that you are preparing. In order to keep Rover safe and... Full story

  • Of a certain age...

    Diane Goble, Correspondent|Updated Dec 1, 2015

I haven't had a TV for years - and rarely do I get to watch one for more than a few minutes just in passing - so imagine my shock when I was house-sitting recently, and decided to turn on the TV and flip through the channels. It's all advertising ... like a continuous barrage of commercials with a few minutes of jokes or news stories in between! The majority of commercials seem to be for pharmaceuticals to combat all the symptoms and diseases all the people who watch TV apparently have (else why would people continue to... Full story

  • The 19th century 'Islamic State'

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Dec 1, 2015

In the 1880s, a puritanical Islamic fundamentalist movement arose in the Sudan, under the banner of the Mahdi - The Expected One, the Redeemer of Islam. The Mahdi's forces swept across the desert like a scorching windstorm. His conquering sword drove everything before it, routing a Western-trained Egyptian army sent to quell the movement. The Mahdi's forces took the city of Khartoum, slaughtered its garrison, and beheaded a famous British general. For more than a decade, even... Full story
