Sisters Outlaws volleyball star Shelly Greene was named 3A Player of the Year last week in a coaches poll. Greene, a junior hitter, helped lead the Outlaws to their first 3A state championship. Outlaws senior Heather Dempsey was named to first team all-state and Suzanne Fouts, also a senior, was named to the second team all-state. Kelly Davis received honorable mention. "I was really shocked," Greene said. "I was really happy because my hard work really paid off." Greene... Full story
Equipment breakdowns and poor weather have hampered Bugaboo Timber Company's efforts to start logging near Suttle Lake, according to Dick Cozby of the Sisters Ranger District. Logging in the Santiam corridor is designed to reduce the threat of a catastrophic wild fire in stands of timber decimated by the spruce budworm infestation of the early 1990s, Cozby indicated. Units have been laid out to provide a fire break. There are two sales in the area, Santiam Corridor and Corridor Follow-up. "Both sales focus on removing the... Full story
To the Editor: This is in response to "Sisters votes for change" in the November 13 issue. I was encouraged to see city residents take an interest in their government, but disturbed by what in my opinion was "panic voting" as evidenced in some of the candidates' comments. All of the issues are tied in some way to growth. The budget shortfall may be due to errors in planning or accounting, but current demand on city services due to growth should certainly be looked at, and perhaps future growth could help finance a sewer... I have buried my husband dozens of times, retrieved my dismembered children from fire, kidnappers, wild horses, dragged them out of lakes and pools and dens of iniquity, and pulled them -- brainless and toothless -- off of baseball diamonds all around the county. I have been eaten by lions, fallen from cliffs, gone both blind and deaf, lost all my hair, been relegated to the poorhouse, and exploded in car wrecks ad nauseam. According to Eudora Welty, one of my personal heroines, this confirms me as an optimist. Firmly rooted... Full story
An enhanced 911 emergency dispatch system went on line in Deschutes County November 19. An emergency caller's address now appears automatically on the 911 dispatcher's computer screen and, once that address is verified, dispatchers can quickly pass the information to firefighters or police. The system enhancement is supposed to allow faster response times for emergency services. It can also help police and fire personnel respond when a caller cannot give their address... Full story
The Sisters Giving Tree went up at Ray's Food Place on Friday, November 30. Already the community is pitching in to help neighbors in need. According to Elizabeth Rierson of the Sisters Kiwanis, tags on the tree have information, perhaps about a five-year old boy who might need clothing, or shoes or perhaps something more fun. Those who want to help can pull the tag and deliver the gift (with tag) to the Sisters Fire Hall where volunteers from the Sisters/Camp Sherman RFPD put the gift together with holiday food baskets for... Clifton and Dorothy Clemens celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, November 26. "Our first date was on Thanksgiving day, 1930. The next Monday I bought a ring," said Clifton. "It was a big diamond, too," said Dorothy. "It cost me $75. I had to pay it off $5 a week. I bought it from Pomeroy and Keene. That store is still there," Clifton added. When asked how they nurtured their marriage through all those years, Clifton said "We never fought. We have had some good discussions. "The meanest thing I ever said to... Full story
Sisters retailers had a bountiful Thanksgiving weekend, with shoppers flocking into town and spending both time and money in the stores. A survey of retailers indicated that visitor traffic was up from previous years and sales either matched or exceeded last year's. The strong weekend sales reflected a nationwide pattern that predicts that consumers will spend more this holiday season. Reports nationwide showed shoppers thronging malls, but there were plenty left over to shop... Full story
Black Butte Police officers are seeking organized representation, probably with the Teamsters Union, according to sources within Deschutes County. Black Butte Police Chief Hank Fegette said that he had not talked to officers about the matter, but he speculated that unionization efforts were spawned by concern over Measure 47 and possible budget cuts. Bill Handy, Chairman of the Managing Board for the Black Butte Ranch Service District, said the paperwork received from the Teamsters had been turned over to Deschutes County,... Full story
