The Deschutes Land Trust continues its quiet pursuit of a land deal that would dramatically increase the organization's already substantial profile in the region. At issue is a 33,000-acre parcel of forestland, known as Skyline Forest, on the eastern slopes of the Cascades between Bend and Sisters. This past spring, the Land Trust was offered a donation of 28,000 acres of the former Bull Springs Tree Farm to manage under a community forest concept. While the idea is still very much in play, administrative complications have... Full story

The Forest Service blew it and they know it. Failure to discuss mop up in detail, lack of clarity about who was responsible for what, maybe a little complacency, led to an escape of a prescribed burn in the Metolius Natural Research Unit this fall. The Wizard Fire ended up covering 1,840 acres and costing $4 million. That's a big mistake. But this mistake can't be allowed to send a valuable program up in smoke. We need prescribed fire in Sisters' forests. Prescribed fire has protected local communities from destruction by... Full story

Taggart attended college for a degree in Mechanical Engi... Full story

Sisters author Kelsey Collins has taken on the difficult issue of elder care in a new book. Collins asserts that with 1.9 million elders currently living in U.S. nursing homes and more than a quarter of them rarely if ever visited by anyone, the quality of life for American elders is worse than ever. The number of seniors in nursing homes is expected to increase by more than five million as baby boomers age over the next 20 years, and with little hope on the horizon for improvement in our health care system, who will take... To the Editor: The US Forest Service report on the Wizard Fire is not the complete review we were promised. Not surprisingly, the report concludes no real mistake on anybody's part, just a communication failure, we really didn't mean to let it get away, etc. In order to assure it doesn't happen again they'll review their procedures, etc. These assurances...
