    Updated Dec 9, 2014

To the Editor: This is in response to your guest columnist, Terry Weygandt, "Rachel Marsden, please leave," December 13. What makes us a great country is that we allow opposing views and freedom to express one's opinion. I congratulate The Nugget for printing both liberal and conservative views. Do I always agree with Robert Reich? No, but I read his column and respect his viewpoint. Mr. Weygandt's question: What does she mean in regards to the Keystone pipeline? Simple answer: the oil from North Dakota and Canada is now... Full story

  • Healing through writing

    Katy Yoder|Updated Dec 9, 2014

Going through cancer treatments and recovery changed me in so many ways. I thought I understood what it would be like, but I was wrong. I had been there for family members as they underwent surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation - but being the supporter and not the patient allowed me to maintain a veil of separation. Being in the hot-seat, that's no longer an option. During each treatment phase I was forced to look at the disease straight on and accept that it was a part of my life. But with all that reality came a coping... Full story

For the past eight years, Rich Barrell has greeted newcomers to Sisters Country at Sno-Cap Mini Storage. Many of those folks were fulfilling a dream by moving here. And all that time, Rich and his wife, Nancy, were working on a dream of their own. Rich always wanted to live in a cabin in the woods, and he and Nancy have been working on that project on land they own in Sunriver for years. "I just turned 67 on the 28th," Rich said. It was a long way for my son Ross from sitting in the back seat of our 1946 Piper Cub in the early '60s - hauling the stick back and forth to cause the nose to go up and down - to becoming the commanding officer of the 926th Air Force Wing at Nellis AFB last week.
