The Sisters Science Club has put science education front-and-center in Sisters schools, providing unprecedented hands-on learning opportunities for children of all ages. Their work just got a major boost from Harry Lonsdale, former owner of Bend Research, who endowed SSC with a gift of $25,000. Lonsdale told The Nugget that he connected with Bob Collins over lunch a while back and was impressed by his enthusiasm. "He never asks for money at all," Londsdale said. "He just tells... Full story
Sisters Country plunged into a deep freeze last week, as high temperatures struggled to get out of the single digits on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the mercury plunged to nearly unheard-of depths overnight. Lows on Sunday morning were reported to range from 20 to 30 degrees below zero in areas of Sisters Country. That kind of cold is potentially deadly, and most folks just stayed indoors over the weekend. Bend cancelled its Christmas parade and the Jingle Bell Run/Walk,... Full story
Last Wednesday, Sisters Elementary School (SES) was in an uproar most of the day with scientists from every walk of life mixing in with the students. Einstein Day was underway. There were worms - real live compost worms, albeit tiny ones - in Mrs. Holden's third- and fourth-grade classroom in the morning. Then in the afternoon the worms were sent to Mrs. Stengel's room for the first- and second-graders to study. While one group of third- and fourth-graders were learning the... Full story
The long-running battle between Wild Mountain food stand owner Ky Karnecki and the City of Sisters opened on a new front last week. Karnecki filed suit Friday against the city, alleging civil rights violations by the city and slander and defamation by individual city officials. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court, names numerous current and former city officials "individually and personally" in addition to the city as an entity. Karnecki is seeking hundreds of thousands of... Full story
To the Editor: Looking around town after the recent "snow event" I see that most businesses have cleared their sidewalks before the City has implemented their proposed snow-removal plan. Most of the problem areas are at vacant lots. This is a code enforcement problem. City code says that sidewalks have to be cleared within 24 hours after it stops snowing. There are several lots that haven't cleared their sidewalks in the 15 years that I have lived in Sisters. We don't need to have the City tell the business owners who is... Full story
The Sisters Ranger District will close a public comment period on the paved path projects in the Sisters area this month. Comments were reopened in early November after a public meeting on the controversial projects. The public comment period, which was reopened on November 7 to allow for more public discussion about the project and included a public field trip, will close on Wednesday, December 18. "We really appreciate the discussion that has come from the additional public-comment period and want to thank people for... Full story

Matthew 25:35 says: "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in..." That is the spirit in which Westside Church conducts its Bread of Life program at its Sisters campus, located at the former site of Three Sisters Fellowship. Each Monday and Thursday, the church opens a food pantry and invites anyone with a need to come there to pick up food. "There's no restriction," says Pastor J... Full story
The Outlaws posted a big 54-26 win over Crook County at home on Saturday, December 7. Sisters got out to a great start in the first quarter with a 10-0 run on the Cowboys. At the end of the quarter the Outlaws held a 14-2 lead. Foul trouble put two starters on the bench, and the Outlaws struggled to score in the second quarter. Sisters played strong defense and at the half were on top 19-11. The Outlaws poured it on in the third quarter and outscored the Cowboys 17-5. Coach... Full story
The Outlaws swimmers went up against last year's state champ, the Madras White Buffaloes, on Friday, December 6. It was a tough first meet for many first-time swimmers who had to match up against top swimmers in the state. Mary Stewart placed first in the 100-meter butterfly and swam one second off the school record. "Mary had a great race and won effortlessly," said Coach Brittany Baldessari. "We would really like to see her set the school record in this event and possibly... Full story

Folks in Sisters have been contributing to an account set up at the Bank of the Cascades to aid the families of employees displaced after a ponderosa pine tree crashed through the Ski Inn on December 1. Last week, the Bank of the Cascades itself kicked in $2,500 to the fund. Bank officials presented a check to Ski Inn owners Dan and Vern Palmer on Thursday. The Palmers have owned the Ski Inn since 1972; they believe the restaurant has been in operation since 1965. Vern Palmer... Full story
Lynn Woodward's current photographic display, titled "Rusting Nostalgic," in the computer room at the Sisters Library is an exhibit that warrants both time and thought to fully engage with each photograph and the questions it raises. Lynn has a keen eye, probing curiosity and deep empathy that come through in her work. Rusting Nostalgic prompts the observer to ask, "What lives on, what rusts away, in front of the camera and in our memories and hearts?" The photographs... Full story
Backcountry Nordic skiers may have a new hut-to-hut route to ski in the future if the Forest Service approves a new route along the Metolius-Windigo Trail and FS Road 370 corridor in Sisters Country. The 20-mile route was proposed by Three Sisters Backcountry, Inc., and would require an amendment of the outfitter and guide service's existing special-use permit. Two equidistant huts would be established on the route, one in Happy Valley on the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District... Full story

Since then the business has expanded widely in Uganda, and sprouted new roots in Indonesia. Kabum owes its startup to the people of Sisters Community Church and Vast Church who first entered Kapchorwa, Uganda, 10 years ago with the intent of engaging in humanitarian projects in Africa. Kapchorwa is a community on the slopes of Mt. Elgon on the eastern border between Uganda and Kenya.... Full story
Christmas inched another step closer on Sunday evening with the 17th annual Magical Voices of Christmas program, sponsored by Sisters Rotary. Hannah Pite was unforgettable. The little girl who battled for two years against a rare form of leukemia won the hearts of the students who raised funds for her family through the Sparrow Club back in 2003-2005. In turn, Sisters came to hold a dear place in the hearts of the Pite family, who live in Bend. "She loved this town," says her father Dani Pite. As the family faced repeated, arduous trips to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, Sparrow Club students performed... Full story
It has been a longstanding tradition that every town in the American West must have a Western store selling cowboy clothing, boots, and everything else with a Western theme. Since 1977, Sisters has enjoyed such a store in Leavitt's. However, the store carries much more than the usual Western gear and the owner, John Leavitt, has had a lifetime of experience as a real cowboy. Located at the corner of East Cascade Avenue and North Elm Street, Leavitt's will soon be starting its... Full story
