The Sisters School Board has ratified a two-year agreement that gives teachers a net 2.5 percent salary increase for the current school year,'94-'95, and an additional three percent in '95-'96. Teachers also won "fair share," under which the district will collect union dues from all teachers whether or not they belong to the union, according to board chairman Bill Reed. Two dogs belonging to Sisters-area residents Frank and June Hoyt died December 3, the apparent victims of arsenic poisoning. June Hoyt told The Nugget that the dogs -- a 12-year old German Shorthair Pointer and a Border Collie mix -- became sick on the morning of December 3. "They were vomiting and pretty soon they couldn't stand up," she said. The Hoyts took the dogs to the Highland Veterinary Clinic in Redmond where they died that night. Opponents of the proposed Hap Taylor/Crown Pacific gravel mine four miles west of Sisters have dropped their lawsuit against the U.S. Forest Service. However, a Notice of Intent to Appeal county approval of the surface mine was filed with the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals on December 6. In a letter dated December 8, lawyer James T. The Sisters School Board has decided to review in greater detail construction and operational costs for a new middle school before deciding on what kind of bond measure to put before the voters, probably next May. In their December 11 meeting the board agreed to revisit the middle school option as part of a post mortem assessment of the $5.5 million bond request narrowly rejected by voters in November. Sometime the weekend of November 25 and 26, someone drove four-wheel-drivevehicles into Three Creek Meadow, the Sisters Ranger District reported. According to the Forest Service, the drivers plowed through the soft -- and in some cases saturated -- alpine meadow leaving scars that will last for many years in the fragile environment.
