'Twas a fortnight before Christmas and at the Habitat store some magic was happening behind their closed doors. Nineteen children were rapt and each carried a list, in search of the thing for their mommy and sis. There was Santa and his helpers, who blue aprons donned, and the Sugar Plum Fairy with wings and a wand. And as music rang out 'bout a babe in a manger, gifts were wrapped, wishes granted, by the kindness of strangers. A group of lucky kids were invited to the... Full story
After a great deal of discussion and public commentary in city council meetings and in the pages of The Nugget, the Sisters City Council deadlocked Thursday night on a proposed water rate increase and revised fee structure for further study. The issue foundered on a 2-2 vote (Councilor Pat Thompson was absent). Mayor Lon Kellstrom and Council President Bill Merrill voted for the new rates; Councilors Sharlene Weed and Jerry Bogart voted no. The effect of the deadlock will likely result in further study of the complex issue.... Full story
Last January, the Sisters Country was hit by one of our periodic windstorms. Shingles were torn off homes by the strong winds that roared through here, and in some cases trees went crashing down on homes and property. If you don't want to see that happen to your trees, you may want to check on their health. Firs, ponderosa pine, aspen and old cottonwoods have adapted pretty well to the wind. But some are wind-thrown, the tops broken out, trunks cracked and split and uprooted.... Full story
To the Editor: This fall I have had the pleasure of teaching the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Institute classes in Wheeler County, in the small communities of Spray, Mitchell, and Fossil. They are so rural they are classified as a "Frontier Rural" county. All of the communities combined have a population less than the Sisters city limits. Spray and Mitchell have the unique school opportunity by having boarding schools. Mitchell is home to 20 live-in high schoolers, many from foreign countries. Spray has seven foreign... Full story
Taylie and Taitem Jensen sweep through the doors of Southpoint Resort in Las Vegas like seasoned travelers, on their arrival for Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). "It's like coming home," they say. For the last two years, the 15-year-old and 8-year-old have attended the finals, where they spend two weeks as caretakers of barrel racer Brenda Mays' horse and babysit children of rodeo competitors like world champion bareback rider Bobby Mote. The girls are the granddaughters of Yvette Moore, Sisters Rodeo member and... Full story
Little hands threaded bright, colored beads with copper wire to make bracelets. They glued tissue paper onto balloons to create lanterns; decoupaged dominoes for refrigerator magnets; painted ceramic tiles to create coasters. These were a few of Thursday night's art projects at Family Art Night at Sisters Elementary School. The school commons was filled with children and their parents creating and building amazing art creations. There was no school funding for the event... Full story
Three Sisters area photographers have their works on display at Sisters Library through the end of this month. Curtiss says, "I found the steam tractor in a storage area crowded with a myriad of items. It was a cold... Full story
Last Thursday night, the Sisters Elementary School Rhythm Wranglers - 39 strong - knocked 'em dead at the annual Sisters Elementary School Christmas program entitled "One Day in December." The house was packed to capacity and after each number the applause from parents, friends and spectators made the building shake. Debi Schlatter directed the extravaganza, and Julie Cash played the piano to keep the rhythm and tunes going smooth as silk. Parents helped in many areas: Stacy... Full story

Sisters Habitat for Humanity is conducting a raffle to raise money to purchase a pre-owned panel truck or van for their ReStore. Robin Tawney, the ReStore manager, explains that the bed of the truck they are currently using is too high and not conducive for the pickup of heavy items that are donated such as refrigerators, washers, dryers and the like. "We need a vehicle that's built lower to the ground and has a ramp to make loading and unloading easier," said Tawney. Accordin... Full story

Lynn Woodward got tired of cold ears and decided to do something about it. Not one to wear a wooly hat in the winter - she likes the protection a wide brim offers - she set about designing a garment that would keep her ears toasty but didn't interfere with the fit of her hats. Woodward is a patient and persistent woman; she began the design process in the late 1990s. She'd been thinking about it for several years prior to that, each time she set out on horseback to guide group... Full story
Dr. Andrew Abdelnour, DMD, has taken over Dr. Brad Braman's dental practice in the High Lakes Building at the corner of Pine Street and Adams Avenue. Braman's retirement was accelerated due to health concerns; he and Abdelnour are long-time friends and it was a good fit for Abdelnour to relocate to Sisters. Abdelnour previously practiced in McMinnville, finishing there in October after spending several months commuting between the two locations. Abdelnour is a McMinnville... Full story
It's been a rough and dusty trail to the screen in Sisters for the new Coen Brothers film "True Grit." The film, based on Charles Portis' classic 1968 novel, gallops on screen December 22 at Sisters Movie House. It ain't so easy for a small theater to wrangle an A-list film during the holiday season. The difficulty of small markets obtaining A-list films during peak holiday periods is further aggravated by an era of opening weekend box office mania and the sheer cost of each film print. Lisa Clausen, owner of Sisters Movie... Full story
