Whether they're performing music or doing a video presentation in an assembly, it's important that students sound as good as they can. With that in mind, Brad Tisdel and Pete Rathbun of the Sisters Folk Festival (SFF) recently installed new sound equipment at Sisters Elementary School. And they're doing another upgrade this week at Sisters Middle School. The equipment is provided as part of a Studio to Schools grant through the Oregon Community Foundation. The program is a... To the Editor: On December 6, at approximately 4:45 p.m., I was traveling east on Highway 126. It was very dark. Someone lost a large Christmas tree in my lane; I hit the tree to avoid a head-on collision. If people are going to cut trees in the forest they should be very sure it is tied down correctly. The Forest Service issues permits with numbers but does not keep record on who purchases. Please be responsible; it cost me $1,600 for their irresponsible act. Last month, for example, the food bank passed out 18,000 pounds of food to over 300 people. The food bank is operated entirely by volunteers, including Kiwanis members and Sisters residents. It requires more than 200 hours of volunteer time to operate the food bank each month. The food bank has no paid staff; everyone volunteers their time. There is a misconception the food... Full story

Lincoln's sparrow [Melospiza lincolnii] is similar to the more common song sparrow, and maintains a somewhat dull grey-and-brown appearance until a closer look is captured. "She was the first person I met when we moved here, and wanted to know everything about me," said a 50-year resident of Sisters and friend of Edith Leithauser. That was Edith's style. There was never a more friendly, happy, or interested person in Sisters history. The character of Maude, in the 1970s cult movie "Harold and Maude" could have been inspired by Edith Leithauser. "You really like people, don't you, Maude?" asked Harold. Maude looked at him with an impish grin and... Full story

The record plays the same song over and over, it has become part of me, crooning uninvited in my head. It isn't until it skips that I realize I am caught in the grooves, in a trance, unable to move. Cancer caused the skip that woke me up, revealing this way of being does not serve me. A new song has arrived. It repeats the need for meditation, exercise, clean eating and healthy thoughts. Since October 25, my sister and I have been doing a dietary cleanse that removed dairy, gluten, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and most fruits... Full story

They live among us, those quiet contemplatives who burn with passion yet rarely express it verbally. It comes out in their art, in songs and in the poems they pen. On the rare occasions when they do talk about things that interest them, it is with eloquence and purpose. Dyrk Godby is one of them. An accomplished artist and singer-songwriter, Godby admits that he often prefers to be alone or in the presence of animals rather than in a crowd. Growing up on an Idaho horse ranch,... Full story

I'm accustomed to receiving quite a bit of feedback on my hiking columns, but I'm always a little surprised when I hear it from people outside of Central Oregon. So, I was once again surprised, and flattered, when I received an invitation to contact Portlander Lewis L. McArthur about my October column on Tam McArthur Rim. Lewis L. McArthur is the 98-year-old son of Lewis A. McArthur, whom one might consider to be the godfather of geographic names in the state of Oregon. Togeth... Full story
