This is the time of year when those fortunate enough to have some discretionary funds to "give back" are thinking about where those funds might do the most good. The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) offers a number of services that might appeal to such an aspiring donor. With either direct contributions or donor-directed funds, the concept of paying some of your good fortune forward is more realistic than you might think. OCF's stated mission is "...to improve life in Oregon and promote effective philanthropy." Its 2012 repo... Full story
The city received a strong reaction to their proposal to contract for snow removal services in the downtown business core. (See nuggetnews.com, December 4, "City to coordinate downtown snow removal.") After meeting with upset snow removal contractors and business owners in the days following the announcement, City Manager Andrew Gorayeb announced at Thursday's city council meeting that the city would take the interim step of first enforcing the snow removal codes now on the books. Gorayeb said, "I am going to make a... Full story
To the Editor: Mr. Cornelius's article regarding my lawsuit against the city of Sisters states "One of the conditions of that permit was the requirement to remove his building when the permit expired." Mr. Cornelius has enough experience covering this issue that he knows darn good and well that this statement is patently false. My original TUP (Temporary-Use Permit) DID NOT have a condition to remove my buildings at the end of the TUP. It was modeled after Richard's Produce's lengthy history of TUPs which also did not... The Sisters Ranger District is currently considering a proposal to increase the number of temporary winter huts allowed near Three Creeks Lake. My husband and I are both avid Alpine, telemark and Nordic skiers who use this area often throughout the winter season. While the proposal is for a Nordic ski route from hut-to-hut, it is not at all clear what the term 'Nordic' is meant to designate. Nordic skiing requires different specialized boots, bindings and skis that are very lightweight and designed for travel over distance... Full story

High school juniors and seniors throughout Central Oregon were invited to audition for a spot on the Bella Acappella Harmony 4 Women fall show. The top four finalists, voted on by the audience, received cash prizes to help them pursue their musical ambitions. Bella Acappella Harmony is an educational non-profit... Full story
Susan Houck and Gary Lovegren are coming to the end of long and distinguished careers with the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District. The district executive assistant and the captain/paramedic are retiring effective December 31. As is the case for so many in the fire service, their work was much more than a job - it was a calling enacted among comrades who became as close as any family. "You feel for them just like you would for your own family," Lovegren told... Full story
Camp Sherman residents and visitors may be forgiven for slowing down considerably when they pass the Metolius Meadows barn this holiday season. At first glance, it appears the red wooden sleigh parked in front of the barn is pulled by fivefull-size deer. (Well, except for the little guy in the front, sporting the red nose. He's not as burly as the others but he sure glows.) A closer look reveals that the deer are actually models - wood-framed, filled with a sawdust/epoxy mix... Full story
You've been invited to spend the holidays at your brother's house in San Diego, California, and decided to hit the road for the 15-hour drive, bringing along the whole family. But what about your four-legged kid? Should he go along too? Although it's tempting to bring Fido with you, you have to consider that some animals aren't suited to travel because of temperament, illness, or physical impairment. You've decided that it wouldn't be a family car trip without Fido, but if... Full story
If there is one member of our native waterfowl community that drives land-managers out of their minds it's Canada geese. Golf course and city park managers look at Canada geese with a jaundiced eye. Black Butte Ranch golf course managers have done everything legally imaginable to prevent Canada geese from staying too long on the greens, even putting out fake eggs for the females to hatch. And Bend Parks and Recreation chased them with dogs and trucked them out of town. Geese a... Full story
Sisters lost 66-47 to Madras at home on Tuesday, December 4, in another tough pre-season girls basketball matchup. The White Buffaloes started the game off at a quick pace and jumped out with an early lead. At the close of the first quarter the Outlaws were down 21-8. Sisters settled down and began to run the floor well but just could not get the ball through the hoop. The Outlaws got good looks but could not get crucial shots to fall, and at the half trailed the White Buffs... Full story

Twenty-two teams were in attendance including past state champions 2A Culver, 3A Glide High School. Sisters had a short week of practice due to school cancellation on Monday because of severe cold conditions. Coach John Downs told The Nugget that his squad took advantage of those three days and focused and worked hard at practice to improve their skills. All... Full story

A passion for the West and the natural world runs through the art of Gary Cooley. The painter and sculptor, who has lived in Bend for the past nine years, has opened a new gallery in Sisters at 352 W. Hood Ave. (in the big white building at the corner of Hood Avenue and Pine Street). "A friend of mine bought this building and he said, 'I want you to be part of the building,'" Cooley said. "He wanted me to open a gallery here, so I did." The gallery displays the African wildlif... Full story
More than gifts, the holidays are about traditions. Saturday evening at the Sisters High School auditorium, Sisters Dance Academy brought holiday traditions to life on stage for the third Winter Dance Recital - titled "Traditions." The Sisters Nordic team had their first classic race at Mt. Bachelor this past weekend with seven athletes completing the five-kilometer race. The temperatures were much milder than last weekend, topping out in the mid-30s. Athletes were appreciative of the warmer temperatures, staying much warmer prior to the race. However, warmer temperatures presented their own difficulties, especially with temperatures hovering around 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Kick wax, the wax that sticks... Full story

Many of the readers of this column know that I lost my 21-year-old daughter Claire last month. I have found it nearly impossible to exercise. Concentration at work is hit-and-miss. Grief weighs heavy on my heart, especially at night and early in the morning. At Claire's memorial I was astonished by the variety of friends from across the years who attended. One that touched me the most was Randy Benthin, who had come all the way from Portland to support his old coach. His name will not be familiar to locals. I coached Randy... Full story
